The recruiting process for Aledo High School left tackle Chuck Filiaga is heating up. The 6-7, 327 pound, four-star talent has narrowed down his list of some 30-plus offers down to a couple of handful of teams. The lucky two that are known are Oregon and Michigan with both receiving an official visit from the Texas talent.
On Sept. 5, Filiaga announced his Top 10 in alphabetical order: Arkansas, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, and USC.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I caught up with Filiaga after his Michigan visit to get an overview on how his official to Ann Arbor went over the weekend and received his next two planned official visits with a list of schools that could be the host for the fifth and final visit.
Interview
How did your visit to Michigan go for you?
“It was great. I really loved it there. We (mom and stepdad) really enjoyed our visit. I got to hang around some other top recruits who were visiting like Alex Leatherwood (five-star OT from Pensacola, FL) and Ceaser Ruiz (four-star center from IMG Academy, Bradenton, FL).”
What all did you do while you were in Ann Arbor?
“We watched the game. The recruits spent time with each other and the players as well afterward. We went to Coach (Tim) Drevno’s (offensive line coach) house for a BBQ and watched some NFL games on Sunday. I met with the strength and conditioning coach, Coach (Kevin) Tolbert on Sunday as well. I finished up by talking to Coach (Jim) Harbaugh (head coach) at the end of my visit. I spent some time with him on Sunday.”
What all did you and Coach Harbaugh talk about?
“He talked to me about how Michigan and their program works. He said he loves the coaching staff and the setup there. He talked about how he sees me fitting into the program if I go there. He talked about how much he loves it there.”
What all did Coach Harbaugh say about you fitting in there? Did he talk about playing time you might receive?
“He said nothing about playing time. He said that Michigan is No. 1 in academics and that they have a good program setup for the players. He said I’d have the best as a student and as an athlete with both academics and athletics at Michigan.”
How do you see yourself fitting in there should Michigan be the school for you?
“I see myself fitting in very well there within the offense. I like their style of offense. The offensive coordinator, Coach Drevno, is a really cool guy. They have a great setup for the offensive line there.”
Did you get to tour any part of the campus?
“We got there late on Saturday because our flight was delayed. We did see the business side of the campus.”
How did your mom and stepdad like the campus, facilities, and staff?
“They loved it. They loved how Coach Harbaugh has the program and academics setup for the players. My mom was really intent on hearing all they had to say about the academic programs. She loved the setup.”
Who was your host during your visit?
“Devin Asiasi (freshman tight end from De La Salle High School, Shoreview, CA).”
Next big question. You have two official visits completed with three left to take if you want them. Do you know which schools will get your next official visits?
“Nebraska and Oklahoma are my next two visits. I have no date set yet for either visit.”
You have one visit remaining, which schools are in the running for that final visit?
“Arkansas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Texas (no order).”
Have you decided when you plan on committing?
“During the U.S. Army All-American Game.”
Last question, how is everything going with school and the team?
“The team is great. We are 5-0, about to go 6-0 this week. School is going really well, I have all A’s.”
Chuck, congrats on a successful visit to Michigan and good luck on Friday night.
“Thank you.”
