The 2016 schedule in California is chalked full of outstanding games with top talent across the board. Even the casual football fan will not be disappointed at any time during the season with the scheduling of games coming their way.
There are several match-ups with top schools crossing state lines ready to do battle. St. John Bosco heads to Bishop Gorman on Sept. 9 in one of the top games in the country this season. A game promising to be fun to watch but is flying under the radar, Timpview (UT) travels to Helix on Aug. 27. Sierra Canyon (Niko Harris) has already represented California well knocking off Orem (UT) 30-20 on the road.
The team a lot of writers are sleeping on is Corona’s Centennial High School (Tanner McKee). Loaded with talent, Centennial is a top challenger to head back to the state title game again in 2016. If they can get past their first three games against Chandler (AZ), IMG Academy (FL), and Orange Lutheran, who could stop them and how could they not be rated as the top team in the country?
Hats off to IMG Academy on their schedule. In addition to Centennial, they also play Grayson (GA) to open the season and comeback to California on Oct. 28 to play Long Beach Poly.
One of the top games that will decide the Trinity League in southern California is Mater Dei (JT Daniels) at St. John Bosco (Re-al Mitchell) on Oct. 21. Orange Lutheran gets a crack at Mater Dei the week before with an opportunity to have a say in how the playoffs are seeded.
Mission Viejo is loaded this year but should get a nice test on Sept. 16 against Long Beach Poly. If the Jackrabbits can take down Mission Viejo, Narbonne, and IMG Academy this year, who could argue with this Nolan McDonald led team as one of the best in the country?
Servite has a lot of hype going into the season with four-star Colorado commit Tyler Lytle in the pocket. Servite will get tested early against De La Salle, the back-to-back California state champs, and play Bishop Amat, St. John Bosco, Orange Lutheran, and Mater Dei. There are college teams that do not have this tough a schedule!
Calabasas (Tristian Gebbia) is loaded with skill position talent highlighted by five-star cornerback Darnay Holmes. The Coyotes get two big tests this year against Salesian (Robbie Blosser) and Newbury Park (Cameron Rising).
The season starts off with a bang on Aug. 26 when Chaminade quarterback Brevin White and running back TJ Pledger square off against quarterback Matt Coral.
