The Longhorns 2017 recruiting class has been an exercise in patience for both the staff and fan base thus far, but good news came to Austin on Wednesday with the verbal commitment of cornerback Josh Thompson.
Thompson became a nationally prized recruit after his junior season coming up with 36 stops along with nine pass deflections. The frenzy on the recruiting trail has been intense with the 6’0”, 182 pound, speedster pushing towards 30 scholarship offers. Some of the hopefuls have included Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Arkansas State, Texas Tech, Louisiana Tech, Houston, SMU, North Texas, Minnesota, Washington State, Utah, and Missouri.
TCU offered Thompson on May 24 earning a commitment from the three-star recruit on June 12. Texas hosted the Nacogdoches High School standout during a camp on July 23 earning an offer from the Longhorns the next day. By July 27, Texas picked up their second cornerback commit to the class joining Lake Dallas product Kobe Boyce.
Thompson posted his announcement on Twitter accompanied with a statement, “Once Again This Is My Decision.. Thanks To Everyone Who Is With Me.”
The Longhorns now have seven commitments to their 2017 class but picked up three of those commits in 2015; Lagaryonn Carson, Damion Miller, and Sam Ehlinger. In April, Texas added Xavier Newman and Boyce followed by Montrell Estell in May. The one silver lining to the Longhorns’ class, each of the recruits have been highly valued with Carson, Miller, Ehlinger, and Estell considered four-star players.
