A shakeup is coming in both the national and California high school football rankings. Top teams from California reached out across the Golden State to square off and across the country turning in mixed results making for a very exciting opening weekend of high school football.
The season officially kicked off on Thursday night with Calabasas playing host to Dorsey at a neutral site game at Agoura High School. The Coyotes put on an offensive and defensive show highlighted by running back Keithan Gooden and receiver Johnny Wilson en route to a 35-12 victory.
The biggest game with early season national title implications was No. 3 nationally ranked St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) taking on No. 17 ranked St. Thomas Aquinas. The Florida skies opened-up for the Fort Lauderdale squad aiding in a low scoring affair that ended with St. Thomas Aquinas claiming a 9-3 win in overtime. The Braves entered the contest as the No. 2 ranked team in California. For those ready to count out St. John Bosco in 2017, the Braves lost two regular season games last season (Bishop Gorman and Mater Dei) before finding their groove ending the year as California state champs ranked No. 2 in the nation.
Fans love the underdogs and the underdogs prevailed in three big games with Narbonne, a city team, defeating Serra, a Mission League team, 17-14, Del Oro topping Cathedral Catholic 22-12, and Servite upending Norco 35-21 at home. Edison got a scare from Tesoro before pulling out the win 48-47.
