Junior Day events, spring practices, and spring games are taking place all across college football’s landscape giving prospective recruits multiple opportunities to get a feel for any given program seeing if a good fit at the next level between staff and player exists. An opportunity for Class of 2018 linebacker Camron Pitcher to checkout UNLV over the weekend was not wasted.
Pitcher started popping up on recruiting boards after being a key player for Centennial High School’s 11-2 season in 2016. The highly productive defender for the No. 8 ranked team in the nation, per MaxPreps, posted stat line of at least 105 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss, nine sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Offers from Cornell and Columbia have come in for the 6-0, 216 pound, bell ringer with schools like Cal, Fresno State, San Diego State, Stanford, and UCLA all showing interest.
Another school showing recruiting love to Pitcher is UNLV. The Rebels hosted Pitcher on another unofficial visit this time the California native got to see UNLV’s spring game in person. In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Pitcher covering his trip to Las Vegas while receiving an update on his overall recruitment.
Interview
Camron, let’s set the stage for your visit to UNLV. When did you get there?
“We go in on Friday, spent the night. The spring game event started at 9:00 on Saturday.”
Who went with you?
“My dad, mom, and brother.”
What all did you do while you were there?
“They gave us a tour of the facilities, which I had already seen. We got to see the equipment room, tried on a jersey and helmet, and took pictures. After that we went into the locker room after the team left. After that we went to the field to watch the game. I spent some time talking to Coach Andy LaRussa (safeties) and Coach Travis Burkett (running backs coach). Coach Burkett just got hired there from Cornell.”
What did the coaches talk about with you during your visit?
“Just that it was nice to see me again and great seeing me back on campus. They told me I would do well with these guys in their system. They also said that they will be back to see me on May 11 (Centennial Spring Showcase).”
Do you see yourself fitting in with the UNLV’s defense?
“Yeah. I do. They have a lot of great guys there that I can see myself working my way to that point and make the transition to college football.”
Did any of the UNLV coaches tell you what they are looking for from you in the recruiting process?
“No. Every time I have been up there their linebackers coach and defensive coordinator (Coach Kent Baer) has not been on campus. He had a death in the family and could not be there on Saturday.”
Overall, how did the visit go?
“It went very well. It was nice to see the campus and facilities again. The spring game went well.”
Did you learn anything new from watching the spring game practice?
“No. I knew their scheme already.”
Did you make any plans with the staff to come back to UNLV anytime soon?
“No. No plans right now.”
Do you have any other visit scheduled?
“I am going to Fresno State and San Jose State on the 21st and then I’m going to Cal’s spring game on the 22nd. The weekend after that, on the 28th, I’m going to Stanford. On the 29th I will be at UC Davis and Sacramento State.”
Busy man. What upcoming camps might you attend or have scheduled already?
“I’m going to a Stanford camp on June 22-23. I’m still waiting on some schools. I may be going to a Cal camp on June 14-15.”
Cam, congratulations on a successful visit to UNLV and good luck with your upcoming visits.
“Thank you.”

This was an outstanding article from the recruit’s perspective and the interviewer. This kid appears to be an intelligent individual and can be a great representive at any school he chooses. I really enjoyed the way the writer allowed him to be himself and I enjoyed hearing an amazing athlete speak well. He seems to be a winner on and off the field.
