Interview
We’re at Redondo Union High School today with Redondo Union Class of 2018 quarterback Jack Alexander. Jack, how is it going today?
“It is going well. Thanks for coming out.”
Thanks for having me. So, you got a couple of games in today with the 7v7 tournament, how have you been throwing today?
“I’m throwing alright. We’ve been moving the ball steadily down the field even with these great competitors like (St. John) Bosco out here.”
Nice. With 7v7 this off-season you’ve added a new position-
“That’s right. I’ve been playing a little safety for my school. It has been going well.”
You had a nice pick in the end zone.
“Yeah-yeah.”
How has playing quarterback helped you on defense?
“I understand what a quarterback is looking at and what a quarterback is looking at pre-snap. I like making plays back there. I’ve come up with some interceptions back there. It has been a lot of fun.”
Now, as a quarterback, how has playing safety helped you on offense? Has that helped you reading defenses?
“Yeah. No doubt. A lot of manipulation with the eyes and even pump fake and shoulder fakes. Any of that stuff. I know that as a defender I tend to fall for that stuff. It has helped both ways.”
Throughout the year, you are always fine-tuning stuff working on your game. What all have you been working on this off-season through the summer?
“I’ve been working on getting stronger in the weight room. I’ve done that. My footwork, especially with my DBs helping me with my footwork. Stuff like that. Getting faster overall. I got a 4.8 40 (yard dash) at the Nike Opening which is – I used to run a 5-flat so I’ve gotten a little faster there.”
Nice. Back in the pocket, have you attended any camps this off-season as a quarterback?
“Yeah. I got a lot of camp invites. We got out of school kind of late so – I made it down to the University of San Diego. I camped there. I felt like I showed my footwork ability and a high football IQ there. I felt like that was a good camp and I loved the school.”
Do you have any official or unofficial visits coming up or any other camps this summer?
“Nothing for this summer. I am just focused on getting my team right for the upcoming season. But I do plan to visit for some games this fall.”
When does Redondo Union start up for fall camp that will lead into the season?
“Fall camp, I believe, starts on August third or fourth, the beginning of August.”
Getting pumped?
“Yeah. I’m excited. I can’t wait for the pads.”
Thanks for your time today, Jack.
“No problem.”
