There are a lot of high school players across the nation poised to make some big noise during the 2016 season. One of the more interesting players to watch out for is American Heritage (Plantation, FL) running back Miles Jones. Jones has a full head of steam behind him going into his junior campaign.
Jones has a wealth of talent and ability, enough that Mississippi State, West Virginia, and Syracuse have already put offers on the table. The list of potential offers is sure to expand with teams like Florida, Florida State, Georgia, and Oklahoma, among others all showing interest.
Just like every other player in the nation be it fellow Class of 2018 or 2017 recruits, Jones has to prove it on the field when the season kicks off. The 5’8”, 170 pound, all-purpose back did all the right things at recent Clemson, South Carolina, and Florida Atlantic camps positioning himself for more offers once tape starts rolling in from the new season.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Jones to get an update on his recent camp visits and received a recruiting news update.
Interview
Miles, which college camps have you performed at so far?
“Clemson, South Carolina, and FAU (Florida Atlantic).”
How did the Clemson camp go for you?
“It was hard getting a lot of reps. There were 900 kids there. The camp was good, but really long and tiring. We did a lot of good drills for receivers and we got a lot of coaches giving good tips on how to improve.”
Did any of the coaches talk to you while you were at the camp?
“I talked to Coach (Brent) Venables (defensive coordinator), he is the lead recruiter for Broward County. I also spoke with Coach (Jeff) Scott, he is the wide receiver coach for Clemson.”
What did the coaches talk to you about during the camp?
“They were saying that I looked good at the camp and I had caught their attention.”
You attended the Clemson camp as a wide receiver?
“Yes.”
How did the South Carolina camp go for you?
“A couple of people called the coaches at South Carolina ahead of the camp telling them to keep an eye on me. South Carolina did not put an offer on the table but they are looking at me.”
Did you attend South Carolina’s camp as a wide receiver as well?
“Yes.”
What are some of the things you did well at the South Carolina camp?
“I did all the drills well. They said I ran hard. I perfected the drills, I was getting open, getting off the jam, and catching everything that came my way.”
That’s all you can do right?
(Laughs) “Exactly.”
Did you run a 40-yard dash at either South Carolina or Clemson?
“I ran a 40 at South Carolina. I ran a 4.53.”
Nice. How did the FAU camp go?
“I went as a running back at FAU. They are recruiting me hard. Jared Allen, FAU’s running back coach, said I did a good job but they did not offer. They want me to come back in July to another camp. There will be less kids there then so they can evaluate me more.”
That’s good news. Do you have any more camps you are going to attend coming up?
“West Virginia this weekend, on Sunday.”
Are any new schools showing interest in you?
“Vanderbilt is showing strong interest and said if I come to a camp and perform well in front of their coaches I would likely leave with an offer. Oklahoma was showing a little bit of interest a couple of weeks ago but I have not talked to them much lately.”
That’s good news about Vanderbilt that they think that highly of you. Miles, thanks for your time today and good luck at the West Virginia camp on Sunday.
“Thank you.”
