In every team sport the mantra of “next man up” is echoed for good reason, especially in football. A spot on the depth-chart should give notice to all players to be ready at a moment’s notice, regardless of who is in front of you and/or how talented said person may be. An injury three games into the season to senior starting quarterback Colton Mitchell thrusted backup Weston Eget into a starting role. Now Eget must capitalize on his junior year opportunities by pushing his game forward during the proving grounds of the offseason.

Through the ups and downs of the 2017 season, West Ranch High School (Valencia, CA) fought forward with a winning 5-4 season. With Mitchell lost for the season, Eget stepped into the Wildcats bright spotlight throwing for 990 yards with eight touchdowns while rushing for three more scores. Far from a finished product, Eget is eager to improve upon his gifting of size, listed at 6-3, 178, and arm, by working with quarterback coaches throughout the Los Angeles area to fine-tune his mechanics. Not even one month into the new year, Eget had already signed up for and competed at the Rise and Fire Camp in Los Angeles to work with top QB coaches in southern California and national QB coach Greg Holcomb. With great determination and offseason goals set, his progress from here rests solely on his drive forward.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Eget covering his 2017 season, offseason workouts, and performance at the Rise and Fire Camp in LA.

Interview

Weston, the 2017 season was your first full season receiving varsity snaps, what were some of the changes you had to make to your game early in the season to adapt to the varsity game?

“I had to move my feet quicker. I knew I had the arm strength to play varsity, I just had to be quicker with all my actions.”

Which areas of your game saw the most improvement during the 2017 season?

“My game speed. I started out as a receiver. Colton Mitchell started the first three games, but then he was injured. I was tossed in there. It was a big jump from JV to varsity, but I threw five touchdown passes in my first game.

“I did learn a lot more about scheming. Reading defenses is a big part of our offense. My ability to see blitzes and know where to go with the ball improved. I feel that my pocket presence and ability to escape along with my mobility also improved.”

As a quarterback, what are some of the things you feel you do well in the pocket?

“My leadership. As a quarterback, you have to be the leader. You are either the hero or the goat.”

What are you working on this offseason?

“I feel that I have a college level arm. Now I am receiving more training working on my footwork and with better footspeed. I am working on anything that will get me better for the 2018 season. I’ve been watching film on Hudl, working with my 7v7 team, and going over my film from last year trying to improve my game. Watching my film from last year, I am seeing the flaws in my game and seeing what I need to improve.”

You recently performed at the Rise and Fire Camp in LA, how did that go?

“I got to see my QB coaches there. The camp was a lot of fun. They helped me improve immensely. I thought I threw decently well. There were a lot of very talented quarterbacks there. I felt like I kept up with them. I held my ground and competed well at that camp.”

What were some of the lessons or drills you learned from that camp that will help carry you forward during your senior year?

“Some of the biggest lessons I took from Coach (Greg) Holcomb were about leadership. On the field lessons I learned – staying balanced and completing my throw with perfect form. I learned a lot about having the best form you can possibly have while throwing the ball.”

Are you planning on attending any other camps or combines this spring or summer?

“Yes. I will be working with my QB coaches and competing at a QB Max Showcase in February.”

You mentioned playing 7v7, which team are you playing 7v7 ball with this spring?

“Team Elite 818.”

How is that helping you?

“Right now, they are pushing a lot of stuff in the weight room and putting us through different dynamic workouts to increase our overall strength and stamina.”

Is there a goal you have set for yourself for the offseason that you want to get accomplished before the 2018 season begins?

“I want to be the best that I can be. I want to gain weight, get stronger, and be the ideal model for a college quarterback. I just want to be the best quarterback and leader that I can be for my senior year.”

What do the Wildcats have to do this offseason to ensure success on the field this season?

“We have to keep working hard. We’ve started in the weight room and we’re on the field working out. We’ve been going hard every single day. We have a young team, so we can’t let anyone plant seeds of doubt in our minds. We have to stay level-minded and then we can do good things this year.”

Weston, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts.

“Thank you.”
