As quickly as Championship Weekend wrapped and the College Football Playoff Selection Committee announced their decision that lights up national talk radio switchboards with furious callers, the bowl season is already upon us. The games begin on Monday when the Sun Belt and Conference USA collide in the Myrtle Beach Bowl pitting Appalachian State against North Texas followed by a string of showdowns every day this week leading into an action-packed Saturday slate of must-see games.
The typical heat on a bowl season seemingly ramps up, not in 2020. On Tuesday, two games promise excitement with Tulane and Nevada heading to Idaho and Central Florida and BYU going south to Boca Raton. On Saturday, Liberty and No. 12 Coastal Carolina get one last chance to flex their muscle on a big stage at Camping World Stadium (FL) aligning the 9-1 Flames against the 11-0 Chanticleers. Liberty, fighting for national respect, faces off against a Coastal Carolina team just four years into their D-I era ready to post a perfect season under head coach Jamey Chadwell.
The mixing and matching of Power 5 programs begin on Tuesday, Dec. 29, when the Big 12 mixes it up against the ACC and Pac-12 seeing Oklahoma State take on Miami in Orlando and Texas meeting up with Colorado in the Alamodome. Some marquee games for the fans to watch out for includes Iowa vs. Missouri, Florida vs. Oklahoma, and Arkansas vs. TCU.
Call it the unofficial playoff game, No. 9 Georgia against No. 8 Cincinnati should bring college football fans from across the country to the TV. Georgia (7-2) took on five AP Top 25 teams falling to then-No. 2 Alabama and No. 8 Florida. Cincinnati (9-0, 6-0 AAC) went head-to-head against three ranked teams, then-No. 22 Army, No. 16 SMU, and took down No. 23 Tulsa 27-24 on Saturday in the AAC Championship Game to remain perfect on the season. The Bearcats have a great showcase game to show they belonged in the College Football Playoff discussion with an opportunity to start the 2021 season with a ranking that could put them in striking distance if another standout campaign is had.
The heat for the national championship begins with the four-team playoff on Jan. 1. No. 1 Alabama meets No. 4 Notre Dame at AT&T Stadium in Arlington (TX) as part of the Rose Bowl and No. 2 Clemson gets another postseason meeting with No. 3 Ohio State at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans as the Sugar Bowl.
