As LL Cool J once loudly stated, “Don’t call it a comeback.” That same thought can be used with Class of 2021 Cabot High School quarterback Tyler Gee (6-0, 185) after sitting out the 2018 season. Gee tore apart defenses during the 2017 season showing his ability to throw on the run, his quick release, and pin-point accuracy. Those same skills will be on display in a new Panthers offense in 2019 switching from a dead-T to a run-pass option attack, with a preview of coming attractions showcased at the U.S. Army All-American Combine. Covering his camp performance and the new offense, I sat down with one of Arkansas’ rising talents in the pocket to learn more about his overall game.
Interview
Tyler, what type of offense do the Panthers run?
“Last year we ran a dead-T. It was hard as a passing QB to be in the dead-T. Scott Reed, our new coach, he runs a run-pass option offense. I am excited.”
How does the RPO offense fit your abilities?
“It fits really well. It is a big change from running a dead-T, it is taking some getting used to but I like it. It fits with my ability to make reads, rolling out, and being accurate – I am very accurate. That will work well in the RPO and with our quick game. Running wise, I do have the ability to run. I can make do.”
What are you working on this offseason?
“I am working on a lot of new things, the biggest being my reads and learning coverages. Our coach will teach us how to better read defenses and breakdown coverages. Throwing to different routes, it is all new at Cabot. They are teaching a lot of route running.
“I also work with Clint Stoerner, he played for the Razorbacks, and Cedric Vaughn – he is my speed and agility coach. I have been working with Clint Stoerner since the eighth-grade year. We have a new strength and conditioning coach at Cabot, Rob Scott. I am learning a lot working with him as well. I am sharpening some new skills this offseason.”
Are you playing 7v7 ball with a travel team this spring?
“Yes. I am playing with Arkansas Elite.”
How will that help expand your game?
“That will help a lot. I have not thrown a lot of 7v7 at Cabot. Doing this will help a ton. It will help with me reading defenses, that is the biggest pro. It will help with timing and getting to know how different receivers work. That will help me with my high school football game.”
Did you get to attend the U.S. Army All-American Combine?
“Yes sir.”
How did the combine go for you?
“The U.S. Army All-American Combine went really well. There was a lot of competition there. I think I performed well especially with my accuracy. My accuracy stood out against other quarterbacks.”
We are a long way off, but are there any college camps you may go to this summer to further showcase your skills?
“Yes. I am looking at going to camps at Arkansas, Auburn, Mississippi State, and Oklahoma State.”
As your recruiting process begins, are there any schools showing early interest in you?
“Yes, sir. At a Mississippi State camp last summer, they brought me to an opposite field and had me throw with their offensive coordinator. They said they would watch my Hudl and keep an eye on me. I hope to perform well at their camp again this summer. At the Auburn camp, I talked to Coach Tim Horton. He invited me to a game. I also talked to head coach Gus Malzahn. He wants to see me back up there for a camp this summer after I performed well at his camp.”
Nice. Some fun questions before we wrap up. What is your favorite subject in school?
“History.”
What do you do for fun away from football?
“I hang out with my friends, hunt and fish, go duck and deer hunting.”
Tyler, thanks for your time today and good luck with your offseason workouts.
“Thank you.”
