On the first February of every year, a Valentine’s Day for college football lovers takes place – National Signing Day. National Signing Day is the culmination of years’ worth of work on the field for high school prospects translating the blood, sweat, and tears into a scholarship offer. For college coaches, it is the end of hours of phone calls and countless emails, hand-written letters, and text messages pouring into players seeking to build that bond that will in turn bear fruit with a signed National Letter of Intent.
With so many factors influencing a prospect’s decision and the availability of a once offered scholarship from said school, even those who are verbally committed may look elsewhere before the final decision is made.
In the never-ending arms race of college football, one team can never have too much talent on the roster. Heading into National Signing Day, Alabama rules the roost followed by Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, and Clemson. The bottom half of the Top 10 is filled by Oregon, Texas A&M, USC, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma. With some last-minute conversations and bold promises, might some of the verbally committed who have not signed on the line flip at the last minute providing rejoice and heartbreak all in a split second? Which teams will move up, or down, the recruiting rankings end of day on Wednesday?
Of the 362 players rated as a four-star or above, there are 12 who are not verbally committed and 15 that have publicly declared their love for a school but have yet to sign their Letter of Intent. While there are players like receiver Jordan Mosely who recently committed to Northwestern after decommitting from Tennessee and four-star Hawaii athlete Titus Mokiao-Atimalala who just announced his intentions with UCF on Saturday, they are less likely to flip. But there might be some of the “locked in” commits that receive a pitch too good to pass up.
The heat is on these 15 committed but unsigned recruits until they sign… and we are watching.
