If the offseason continues at the current rate, Derrick Wise is the attraction at Northside High School that will bring more visitors to campus than an Arkansas state park. The Class of 2019 standout athlete was a one-man gang in 2017 earning All-State honors playing quarterback and safety for the Grizzlies. Wise’s heroics led his team to a first round 21-9 upset win over Har-Ber (Springdale) and then he showcased his speed and abilities against eventual state champs North Little Rock, the No. 7 ranked team in the nation per MaxPreps. Now all the colleges throughout the country are seeking out time with the rising star.

Wise (5-10, 185) was a collector of all-purpose yards and tackles in 2017 and is now a collector of emails, direct messages, campus and camp invites, and coaching visits at his Fort Smith high school. In 2017, Wise jumped on the recruiting boards for Arkansas, Oklahoma, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Missouri, Florida State, Ohio State, Arizona State, Memphis, Notre Dame, USC, Western Kentucky, SMU, and LSU. During a phone interview on Wednesday, when asked about his new recruiting interest, Wise added Tulane, Arkansas State, and Memphis to the growing list.

College coaches logging in at the front desk this month includes Arkansas State, Central Arkansas, Memphis, and Arkansas. Razorbacks tight ends coach Barry Lunney, gave an in-person invite to an upcoming Hogs Junior Day event. When asked about the gist of the conversation, Wise said, “Coach Lunney wants me back on campus and told me to keep working hard.” Wise will make good on the extended offer with plans to head to Fayetteville on Feb. 24.

The new spread offense under Arkansas head coach Chad Morris was not discussed with Coach Lunney, but Wise did have thoughts on the attack, “The spread is a good offense. I can’t wait to see them play this year. There is a lot of hype around here about the new staff and the new offense.”

When the Red Wolves came by, the staff told Wise, “they really liked my film and they want me to come to a camp to run a 40-yard dash.” Other college coaches will get to see Wise perform in person at their camps, Wise says he plans on attending camps at Oklahoma, Iowa State, Arkansas, and possibly Missouri. Some of the programs are getting a second shot at having Wise on campus, thus far his has taken unofficial visits to Iowa State, Arkansas, Henderson State, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma.

The Class 7A All-State performer plans to extend his camp and combine showcases beyond the college circuit. Wise has additional camp dates at the Nike Regional Opening in Dallas and an Adidas camp. If all that college programs want to see from Wise is a 40-yard dash before offers start to drop, he ran a 4.59 last summer at a camp and believes with his offseason workouts going great that a 4.4 could be in the works this spring and summer.

*Final 2017 Season Stats for Wise on Offense:

Rushing: 209 carries for 957 yards with 10 touchdowns

Passing: 98-of-168 passing 1,051 yards with 13 additional scores
