When talent, determination, and athleticism come together, you get a player like Deavyn Woullard. Woullard is that rare athlete who can burn the opposition from anywhere on the field playing receiver and as a return specialist. The complete package mixed with upside now has schools up and down the west coast reaching out to the three-star recruit trying to forge a relationship that will quickly turn to offers, and for one hopeful school, a signed letter of intent.

Woullard (6-0, 180) started making noise on the recruiting trail in 2016 securing 17 passes for 271 yards with a score. During his junior season, he stepped up in a big way for La Habra High School snagging 30 passes for 719 yards with 10 trips into the end zone. On special teams, he took back six kicks for 160 yards and moved field position in favor of the Highlanders 77 yards off four punts returned with one score posted.

Interest has picked up quickly with UCLA hosting Woullard on a 2017 game day unofficial and Arizona, Arizona State, Fresno State, UNLV, and Utah being among the early birds recognizing his abilities. The spring evaluation period will be a busy one for both Woullard and college coaches with several unofficial visits set. In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with the rising California star finding out which schools will get to host him over the spring months.

Interview

Deavyn, your recruiting is really heating up in January, you entered the month with double-digit interest, which schools are showing new interest?

“I am seeing new interest from Harvard, Air Force, and New Mexico – they came up to our school. They are coming back in the spring. UC-Davis and UCLA are also showing a lot of interest.”

Have any college coaches come by La Habra to meet with you in person this month?

“We’ve had about 10 or more schools come by: Penn, Arizona State, Air Force, UCLA, UC-Davis, New Mexico, Washington, Washington State, Cornell is going to come by, Fresno State, Army, and Navy.”

That is a lot. When you’ve talked to the different coaches, what did they tell you they like about your game?

“Most coaches say they like my size, speed, and ability to make plays. They all like my versatility. They know I will be playing both the Wildcat QB and defense this year. They like my 24-yard per catch average too.”

I bet. Did they say what they are looking for from you before they extend an offer?

“The only schools that have told me what they are looking for are the Ivy League schools. They want to see my SAT scores. The other schools said they will be back in spring to look at my size. They want to see more improvement on my size. They like my grades too. I think most are waiting to see SAT scores and to see who they sign in February.”

Which schools are perhaps showing a little more interest above the others?

“UNLV, Arizona, Penn, Harvard, Cornell, Air Force, and Wyoming are showing the most interest.”

Last time we spoke, you had a couple of tentative visit dates for different schools hanging out there, have you set any unofficial visits for the next couple of months?

“Yes. I have SAT prep classes in February, so I will start taking my visits in March. My academic performance is very important, throughout my high school career I have maintained a cumulative 3.7 GPA.

“In March, I will visit UNLV and Utah. In April, I will visit Arizona State, Arizona, and I’ll go back to visit UNLV again. I am competing in the Polynesian Bowl then. After those visits, I plan on visiting Fresno State, Cal, Oregon State, and Stanford in April or May. Over the summer, I will take visits to Syracuse and Cornell as well. During my bye week, I may go to visit Penn or Harvard.”

What has you excited about visiting Arizona?

“They have a new head coach, Coach (Kevin) Sumlin – I want to meet him. I want to see their campus again. It is beautiful, they have great facilities at Arizona. I’m looking forward to seeing Coach (Chris) Singletary (recruiting) again. I told him about wanting to major in Aero Space Engineering, he said there might be a good fit for me there with their engineering program.”

What has you excited about visiting Arizona State?

“Coach (Tony) White (cornerbacks) came to our school. When we talked in person, he seemed really interested in me. Last year they were building their new facilities, I am excited to see them now. I have met Coach (Rob) Likens (offensive coordinator), I would like to see him again. I am excited to get a better feel for the school. They are a big engineering school too.”

What about the Utes, what has you excited about heading up to Utah to see their campus?

“One of my old teammates is up there, he will be showing me around. I have not met that many of the coaches yet on Utah’s staff. I have never been there yet. I want to check out the state and see if that is a good fit for me. They are a very competitive football program, they are Pac-12. Nothing gets better than Pac-12 football.”

How are your offseason workouts going?

“They are going well. I have a new track coach. We’ve been working at it for a little bit. We have a few sessions in already. I am working on my running form. I think my speed will increase a lot this year. I am looking to run a 4.4 or 4.3 this offseason. The lifting program at La Habra is helping, I’m at 180 pounds now. My speed has increased with squats, dead lifts, and hand cleans. I am working on my route running and getting in and out of breaks faster. The offseason work is going well. I keep improving.”

Are you playing 7v7 ball this spring or summer?

“I won’t be on any club teams this year. With trying to balance my time, I think it’s more important to commit most of my time to my private training focusing on improving my primary assets – strength, speed, and position skill sets. I will compete with my high school in some tournaments like the Battle of the Beach, the Orlando Scandrick 7v7 Tournament, and the Saugus Under the Lights Passing Tournament plus several team scrimmages.

Have you set any camp or combine dates yet?

“I have not focused on that yet. I have one combine I will attend, the Polynesian Bowl Combine. With college camps, as of now I plan on attending an Arizona, Fresno State, UNLV, Oregon, USC, and UCLA camp.”

Deavyn, thanks for your time today and good luck with your workouts and upcoming visits.

“Thank you.”
