The recruiting trail had been quiet for Georgia with fans waiting for the next big commitment after receiver Mark Webb joined the class on Sept. 15. The long wait was for a good one finding out that in-state linebacker Walter Grant is heading to Athens next season.

Grant plays for one of the high school teams with one of the best mascot names in the country, the Syrupmakers. His Cairo squad has posted a 9-1 record so far this season getting Baldwin in the first round of the 4A playoffs. Grant has put his all-around athletic skills to the test this season lining up at running back on offense rushing for a team-high 466 yards with six scores. Defensive stats are incomplete, but Grant has been pulling his weight on both sides of the ball this season.

Colleges have offered Grant, but many have backed off guessing he was a Georgia lock. In all, seven offers have been reported but all from top programs like Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Kentucky, Florida State, and Auburn.

247Sports ranks Georgia’s 2017 class No. 3 in the nation, No. 2 overall in the SEC, while Rival ranks the class No. 5 in the country.  Of the 16 commits, 12 are considered four-star recruits by Rivals.
