The LSU Tigers football staff breathed a big sigh of relief on Wednesday when backyard five-star cornerback recruit Derek Stingley Jr. verbally committed. Stingley’s commitment is a big boost for LSU’s 2019 recruiting class while keeping him away from SEC foes.
Even a weather shortened 2017 season could not keep Stingley from showcasing his overall athleticism and talents. The 6-0.5, 193-pound, speedster showed out on offense at receiver and running back but shinned even brighter on defense. Stingley’s Dunham squad was limited to a nine-game season, yet their standout still racked up 64 stops with six passes broken up and was credited with 11 picks.
That type of play did not elude college recruiters. The Baton Rouge area product was extended 32 reported offers before his commitment with teams like Arkansas, Clemson, Auburn, Notre Dame, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Oregon, Michigan, and Stanford among the hopefuls seeking him as a cornerstone talent for their upcoming class. On May 7, Stingley listed LSU, Florida, and Texas his Top 3 schools taking visits to Florida on April 14 and June 1, Texas on May 4, and LSU on June 20 before announcing his decision. The college football recruiting world found out about Stingley’s commitment via Twitter with a video that quickly racked up thousands of views.
Stingley’s commitment is the 13th for the Tigers’ 2019 class raising their recruiting ranking per 247Sports to 10th nationally and fifth in the SEC. Stingley is the second five-star talent to commit to LSU joining fellow Baton Rouge standout guard Kardell Thomas (Southern University Lab).
