Few freshmen get to make a varsity high school football roster, and even fewer earn the privilege in Georgia’s 7A ranks. Yet, during the 2018 season, Class of 2022 athlete Terian Williams impressed the coaches on the Parkview High School staff enough to not only make the squad but got time on the field. Williams is the rare and unique athlete capable of doing seemingly anything asked of him at a skill position.
Williams lined up at quarterback for the Panthers completing 8 of 13 passes for 60 yards tossing two touchdowns without a pick and rushed for 95 yards. While the season was going on, he was also improving his trade at corner. Playing against his peer group, he threw for 1,305 yards with 10 touchdowns, rushed for 904 yards with nine scores, and came up with 73 tackles, 44 solo, three picks, and two fumble recoveries. Between his play on the field as a freshman, the spring evaluation period, and his impressive list of college camps attended, the 5-11, 170-pound, MaxPreps All-American (all-purpose athlete) has earned eight scholarship offers coming from Florida, Florida State, Howard, Illinois State, Kentucky, Rutgers, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
When the 2019 season kicks off, a lot of attention will be focused on Williams and the Panthers. Parkview High School opens the year with a preseason MaxPreps ranking of No. 4 in Georgia. For Williams, he will be starting at corner and punt returner with snaps at quarterback. When college coaches take a deeper look at Williams, they will find a true student-athlete who carries a 3.8 GPA and has already scored a 24 on the ACT and a 1300 on the SAT.
In an RNG exclusive interview, I sat down with Williams to find out how he has prepared for his sophomore season receiving an update on his early recruiting process.
Interview
Terian, how did the experience playing on the field for the Panthers as a freshman last season help you with your offseason workouts?
“Playing with the Panthers my freshman year let me know that I had different things I had to work on to improve. At cornerback, I knew I had to work on being more patient. At quarterback, I knew I had to work on reading defenses both pre- and post-snap reads.”
Which areas of your game did you focus on overall this spring and summer QB?
“I focused on perfecting my craft, my throwing motion, and reading defenses. I also worked on my check down reads from my first to second and second to third reads.”
Same question but at corner?
“As a corner, I worked on press, my man-to-man, opening up my hips quicker, being more patient, and reading receivers.”
Where are you seeing the biggest growth with your skills at quarterback?
“The majority of my improvement is in my throwing motion. My motion is much faster now. My reads have improved. If my first receiver is not there I am going to my second and third reads faster.”
Where are you seeing the growth as a corner?
“My man to man has gotten way better. My eye-discipline is much better as well.”
Given all that you can do with your athleticism, where all will we see you on the field this season?
“I am starting at corner and punt returner, and rotating in at quarterback.”
What has the quarterback battle been like this offseason for you?
“I don’t call it a battle we have a senior starting at quarterback (Jordan Williams). We are different types of quarterbacks. We push each other to get better each day. We want the best for each other and are very supportive of one another.”
Did you compete at any college camps this summer?
“This summer I went to a lot of college camps. I went to Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Duke, South Carolina, Florida, Florida State, Kentucky and Louisville.”
Wow. That is a lot of camps. At which position did you compete at with each camp?
“At most of the camps I competed at corner. Sometimes I went in at quarterback after my reps at corner.”
Of all the camps, which did you turn in your best personal performance?
“My best… I would say the Florida and Florida State camps were my best. Northwestern was a good one too. Northwestern was one of my first camps of the summer. I was ready for that camp.”
Did you run a 40-yard dash at any of the camps? If so, what’s the best time you posted?
“I ran a 4.6 at the Northwestern camp.”
Going into the season, which schools are showing interest?
“Northwestern; their coach told me when I went up there, they want see early film on me. Notre Dame is showing interest at corner; they like my dual-athlete role. Georgia Tech, Duke, and Louisville are showing interest. Most of the schools want to see early film at corner because most of my film was at quarterback from last season.”
I know you have blown up on the recruiting trail. How many offers do you have?
“I have eight offers.”
Aside from the camps, which schools did you visit this offseason?
“I went to some spring practices this offseason. I went to Georgia Tech, Notre Dame for their spring game, and to South Carolina.”
Do you have any planned visits coming up this fall?
“Yes. I plan on visiting Florida, FSU, Notre Dame, Northwestern and some of the schools that have offered me.”
No pressure, but MaxPreps has the Panthers ranked No. 4 in the state of Georgia to start the season. In your opinion, how is the team looking?
“We are looking very good. I feel we are the No. 1 team in Georgia. We came up short last year. But we are not the same team as last year. We are gelling. We are coming together with a goal of a state championship.”
You guys open the season on Aug. 23 going on the road to face Mountain View. What kind of game are you expecting from the Bears?
“On defense, last year they were in a Cover 2. On offense, we have talked about their spread and two-back set in practices. They will bring their all. They know what we have going on. I see it as being a good competitive game.”
Which games on the schedule are you most excited to play this season?
“Lowndes (Sept. 6) is one team I am excited to play. All the down south teams are fun to play. They are like college games. Milton (Sept. 27), they won state last season, and Brookwood; that is a rivalry game.”
Terian, I appreciate your time today and wish you and the Panthers a successful 2019 season.
“Thank you.”
