Miami Southridge rolled to a 12-3 record during the 2024 season behind the live arm of James Perrone. The Class of 2027 recruit sprayed the field with the pigskin accumulating 2,966 yards with 30 touchdowns while rushing for 347 yards putting it into the end zone four more times. Six offers are down, with a lot more to come once word spreads on Perrone’s (6-2, 180) abilities in the pocket.

Asked how operating in a Spread offense against 6A Florida teams fits his skillset, Perrone replied, “It lets me play to my full potential by spreading out the offense and giving me more options. We ran a lot of empty sets; having an extra guy in the routes, that made it easier, and it made me more of a threat with that extra guy out there. We did more designed runs; that also made me more of a threat.”

Appalachian State, Colorado State, Georgia State, South Florida, Toledo, and Virginia Tech are the teams seeing what Perrone can do for their offense already.

College coaches are letting Perrone know why he is a special QB.

“One thing I hear a lot is that they really like my escape-ability,” Perrone said. “They like how I make plays when plays break down, and they like my accuracy a lot. Overall, I am hearing good things.”

Working over the offseason with his father and California based QB coach Danny Hernandez, Perrone spoke about what he is fine-tuning with his game, “One thing is getting my mechanics perfected. I want to be more consistent. I am working on throwing on the move and throwing on the run. I do a lot of work at home going over reads and working on the white board.”

The first scholarship extended came from Appalachian State curtesy of coach Frank Ponce, then offensive coordinator for the Mountaineers, now the tight ends coach for FIU.

“It was great,” Perrone stated. “It was a good day. I was really happy that day. We were going over my film, we were sitting down watching it, and he stands up but before he left, he said “yeah, we are going to offer you”. I was like what? He said, “yeah, you have an offer to App State”. It was great.”

The Bulls brought Perrone to Tampa for a game-day this fall.

“It went great there,” Perrone shared. “It was awesome. When we got there, we chilled in the players’ lounge. Their coaches came up and talked to all of us. After the game, they brought us into the locker room; I saw what that is like after a game at the college level. It was cool.”

Before Perrone gets back on the recruiting trail, college coaches are stopping by Southridge to meet him.

“I just had Illinois come by two days ago and I was supposed to throw with Miami that day, but they were going to South Dakota to see a transfer player,” Perrone said. “I had to reschedule to throw for coach (Shannon) Dawson. Coach Mario Cristobal did come by; he said good things to me.”

Former IMG Academy and Illinois QB Artur Sitkowski, now assistant quarterbacks coach for the Illini, got to watch Perrone throw.

“I did a throwing session; I threw well for him,” Perrone said. “It was a good thing.”

Among the teams showing interest in Perrone include Indiana, Minnesota, Maryland, Illinois, and Syracuse. All the interested parties and more may see Perrone this spring or summer.

“I am thinking about doing a west coast trip during camp season,” Perrone stated. “I want to get to all the colleges that are showing interest; Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois, Maryland, and I will try to get to Syracuse.”
