Whatever Wallace-Rose Hill High School (Teachey, NC) needed on offense during the 2023 season, Irving Brown delivered. Tough yards up the middle, breaking to the outside, hauling in passes, and even dropping back to deliver the pigskin, Brown (5-10, 193) made it happen to the tune of 2,130 all-purpose yards. Eight scholarships are down with rising interest among ACC programs.
The straw that stirred the Bulldogs’ offense produced 1,696 yards with 23 scores on the ground, was 2 of 2 passing for 28 yards and a touchdown, and secured 12 passes for 232 yards with three more trips into the end zone. Adding to the impressive resume, eight kick returns for 198 yards.
“We ran a Wing T, but our QB was getting hurt,” Brown said. “Then we went Wildcat some when he wasn’t there. I was running the Wildcat on some plays.”
Brown continued, “I was the two-back; we ran 33 up the gut, 28, 26, and 20. At the wing, I would stutter step and go up the guy like a trick play.”
After the big stat season, Brown broke down the things he does well on the field.
“Seeing the holes, reading linebackers, cutbacks in the hole, blocking, and my footwork,” Brown stated. “Most college coaches ask if I can catch, then they see my film and tell me that my hands are a strength.”
Ready for another explosive season out of the backfield, work is being put into the game.
“I am working out this offseason,” Brown shared. “I am working on my explosion and having better acceleration. We just got the Catapult with the tracking system; I am working on speed, my footwork, and acceleration to get to 20 miles per hour faster.”
Off the gridiron, Brown also suits up for Wallace-Rose Hill on the hardwood and on the track competing in the 100, long jump, 4×1, 4×2, and sometimes in the 200. The productivity and athleticism have scholarship opportunities coming Brown’s way.
“I have offers from Wofford, Elon, Appalachian State, Yale, Columbia, Princeton, Arkansas State, and North Carolina Central,” Brown said.
The evaluating teams were listed out by Brown, “Old Dominion, Duke, I went to UNC (North Carolina), Coastal, and Lehigh is looking at my film. Ohio is showing interest, James Madison has been texting me, and Virginia; they want me to go up there for a camp. They like my film.”
Brown added, “They are all showing an equal amount of love. Columbia is showing a lot. Princeton texts me every day, App State, Wofford – they all text me.”
Duke, UNC, Coastal Carolina, and Old Dominion have welcomed Brown to campus thus far in 2024. Brown spoke about the two ACC visits.
Duke: “It went well. They were going through drills; one of their players got hurt, that changed up the momentum. Their QB is going to be something dangerous.”
UNC: “It went really well. They are really active, they are organized, they compete hard, and they go at it.”
More visits are coming up for Brown with a round of Ivy League stops scheduled for this spring.
