Another in-state commit for Texas A&M, another four-star recruit added to the 2017 recruiting class. The Aggies got good news on Sunday when Kimball High School linebacker/all-around athlete Devodrick Johnson recommitted to the program.
Johnson has been down this path before committing to the Aggies on July 14 but had a change of heart on Aug. 8. After offers continued to come in, Johnson and the Aggies’ staff kept in touch leading to an unofficial visit on Oct. 8. A reported official visit to Illinois on Oct. 28 was not enough to sway Johnson out of the Lone Star State pledging to A&M again on Nov. 6.
Colleges across the country love Johnson’s pure athleticism. All that he can do has been showcased on the field for Kimball High School playing quarter, running back in the Wildcat, and receiver for the Knights on offense. During his junior season, the 6-1, 220 pound, talent passed for 990 yards with 12 touchdowns, rushed for 580 yards scoring the pigskin nine more times, and hauled in six passes for 57 yards with two more scores. 2016 stats have not been released for Kimball yet.
Johnson posted his commitment on Twitter which was narrowed down to Oklahoma State, Illinois, Mississippi State, Cal, and A&M. The post led to a video commitment reading, “Thank you to all my family, friends and fans that stayed true but now I’m committed to…”
The partial list of the 20-plus schools to offer Johnson includes TCU, Purdue, Louisiana Tech, Colorado State, UTSA, Texas Tech, Central Florida, SMU, Minnesota, and Arizona.
Texas A&M has been slow and steady on the recruiting trail last picking up a commitment from defensive end Tyree Owens on Oct. 8. The Aggies now have the 11th ranked recruiting class in the nation per 247Sports, No. 5 in the SEC. Rivals rates the 2017 class No. 9 in the nation with nine four-star commits. If the Aggies take a full class of 25, just two spots remain open.
