Comparisons are unfair, especially this early in the game, but one can’t help but wonder if JJ Chapman is on a similar path as JJ McCarthy. Before heading to IMG Academy, McCarthy developed his skills in the region out of La Grange Park, Illinois. Chapman (6-0, 168) is putting the hurt on Wisconsin defenses breaking just about every statistical record possible against his Class of 2028 peer group. Another key development piece that cannot be ignored, Chapman is getting extra tutelage from Greg Holcomb, the same QB coach who helped McCarthy on his way to Michigan.
Chapman spoke about the offense executed with Oak Creek, “We ran a Spread passing offense. When running, we’d go tight with two tight ends, sometimes in a flex position. We did a lot of passing, spreading the ball out with quick hitches, posts, slants, and all that good stuff. We did a lot of pacing so we could gain yards as fast as we needed it.”
The traits to success on the field were covered.
“My style is a dual threat,” Chapman said. “I ran when I needed to or as it was called, but I am great at staying in the pocket and throwing off balance. Working with coach Greg Holcomb, everything I have to do as a quarterback has gone up levels after working with him. I am good throwing on the run. If I am running, I can hit a receiver 40-50 yards downfield if needed.”
Chapman continued talking about his strengths off the field, “I am coachable and have great leadership. I won the Team Captain award and have a 4.0 GPA; I have a great work ethic. I am also a student of the game. I look to inspire kids to get better at a younger age. In our district, I won an Academic Award, and I gave a speech in front of all my teachers; a “Back to School Address”. I was nominated for that in 2021.”
The winter and spring grind is preparing for varsity action this fall.
“I am getting in the weight room,” Chapman stated. “I am in there every morning before school Monday through Wednesday. On Thursday, I work with my varsity coach. I am also doing speed training with a trainer. I want to get bigger and stronger; my goal is to be a four-year starter. I am playing with my varsity receivers, tight ends, and running backs. I am excited to battle with whoever is competing against me to win the job.”
Chapman is a multisport athlete, but the focus is on the gridiron.
“I run track and play basketball, but I am not playing baseball this year,” Chapman shared. “I have played baseball my whole life, but I didn’t want to injure my arm. I’m on two basketball teams and I run track both long and short distances.”
As recruiting interest comes Chapman’s way, fans will be able to see him throw at the end of this month at the Battle of Miami 7-on-7 tournament.
