TAMPA, Fla. – Standing in the pocket and letting it rip, Jayce Nixon showcased the arm talent a year ago. By design or when the play broke down, Nixon (6-0, 205) was able to hurt Florida defenses with his legs keeping the chains moving for Gaither (Tampa). After a breakout sophomore campaign, Nixon is ready to take his skills to the next level this fall lifting his Cowboys’ squad along the way.
Hitting 64 percent of his passes covering 3,269 yards says a lot. Adding 36 touchdowns were tossed sends a statement. On the ground, Nixon toted the rock 39 times covering 252 yards with another touchdown scored.
The style of offense executed at Gaither was explained by Nixon, “We got a lot of dudes in, so we are running a Spread. Our mindset is to get the ball to them. Get the ball in the hands of our athletes. We will run a lot of RPO (run-pass option), throw the bomb, and let the athletes make plays.”
Nixon has been developing the physical and mental parts of his game this summer.
“I’ve been working on my reads and watching a lot of film,” Nixon stated. “Last year I had a lot of turnovers, this year I am trying to crack down on that. I’ve also been working on using my legs; I didn’t use my legs a lot last year.”
Picking up offers from Maryland, Rhode Island, Jackson State, and Toledo, Nixon was asked what he feels are the strengths to his game.
“My mindset, pre-snap reads, and I watch a lot of film,” Nixon shared. “Having an idea of what the defense will do before the snap so I can get my guys the ball.”
This summer, Nixon got to spin it for a few college programs.
“I started off at Florida and then I did a back-to-back-to-back with Maryland, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest,” Nixon said.
The Terrapins got to see Nixon shine.
“Maryland was definitely my best performance,” Nixon stated. “Afterwards, I had a private workout with them and went on a tour.”
With Wake Forest and Virginia Tech among the coaching staffs showing interest, early relationships are being developed with Nixon.
“Maryland is one, Wake Forest, I have talked to them a couple of times and when I was up there, and Mississippi State,” Nixon said. “Before the passing of coach (Mike) Leach, I was pretty close with them. Some of the guys that were there before coach Leach passed, I am still in contact with some of them.”
The Terrapins impressed enough prompting a possible return to College Park this fall.
“I don’t have anything set up right now, but Maryland is definitely one I want to get back up to after seeing their coaches and being up there on the tour,” Nixon shared. “I really liked that place.”
