On a Corona del Sol roster with very talented playmakers, Jai Jones (6-1, 175) proved he belonged on the field. Playing far above his freshman status, Jones competed in all three phases of the game for the Aztecs breaking out on the offensive side of the ball. This fall, Jones will play with another Arizona 6A squad, Chandler, bringing an eager next level crowd with him.
Details on Jones’ freshman year were shared, “I was playing varsity for the first time. My coaches told me that I was ready to play varsity. When I went in, there were a lot of guys that had open arms. They were teaching me new things. They were good at bringing me in, showing me the ropes, and the game play at that level.
“The older guys got me ready. When we got to the season, I was there. I was working with the older guys – Raiden Vines-Bright, Crew Swearingen, Brandon Holmes, and Key’von Thomas.”
Corona’s coaches utilized Jones’ growing talents at inside and outside receiver, corner, on kick return, and as a gunner. How is overall game improved was covered.
“I do a lot of prep physically and a lot mentally,” Jones shared. “Confidence was a big thing; knowing I can make that move. My route running, high pointing the ball, and on defense with my coverage, reading QBs, reading receivers, and baiting.”
With the Wolves, receiver will be a focus.
“I like both sides of the ball equally now,” Jones stated. “At Chandler, I know I will play receiver with some DB runs but not the same as my receiver runs.”
Arizona, Arizona State, Northern Arizona, and Colorado State have handed over scholarships. Jones spoke about how they came his way, “All my offers came in person. I got my first three from 7-on-7, and my last one from a meeting at the school after the dead period.”
The next teams that could offer were listed, “Washington, USC, Texas, Oregon, Georgia, and Colorado are showing interest.”
Arizona and Arizona State may get Jones back on campus in the coming weeks.
“I want to go to UA and ASU,” Jones said. “Both are in-state schools. Those schools are close. Other schools have not made that move yet.”
The skills will go on the road this offseason playing 7-on-7 ball with Five-Star and Battle Boys Elite.
