When Greenwood High School (Ark.) takes the field against 6A competition this fall, there will be a new full-time leader in the pocket in Kane Archer. Getting quality time on the field as a freshman, Archer (6-1, 201) showed he’s ready to lead the Bulldogs. The All-American status and 14 offers behind him, Archer is set for an explosive sophomore campaign.
Appearing in eight games last fall, Archer hit on 61 percent of his passes covering 709 yards with nine touchdowns tossed. Showing off his dual-threat abilities, he took 22 carries for 129 yards posting four more scores on the board.
Archer explained the Bulldogs’ offensive attack, “We run a Spread. We never go under center. We are always empty. I don’t think they have ever gone under center at this program.”
Taking over the reigns of the offense, Archer is already preparing for the fall schedule.
“I am mainly trying to get bigger,” Archer stated. “I played last season at 185. This season I am trying to play bigger to take more hits. I have been working on my pocket passing, reading defenses better, and knowing what they are doing pre-snap.”
Archer continued talking about his strengths and where he is seeing improvement in his game, “Definitely after the play breaks down, I am good. I feel like I need to work on my medium ball, but my deep ball is good. My legs are more involved in my throws instead of using all arm. I am seeing more after studying coverages.”
The list of offering programs is already impressive which includes Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Michigan, Florida State, Louisville, Missouri, and Arkansas. Those 14 offers are about to get some company.
“I’d say USC is showing interest,” Archer shared. “I have been out there two or three times; I try to stay in touch with them. Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, LSU, they in-boxed me the other day, and Florida sent something the other day. Duke has sent letters to my school.”
After taking multiple visits to LA hanging with the Trojans, Archer detailed his interest in the program.
“USC is out in LA, all the fans, and I think it is cool,” Archer said. “USC has coach Lincoln Riley and just added coach Kliff Kingsbury (OA). Lincoln is one of the smartest offensive-minded people I have seen and met. His last three quarterbacks have been Heisman (Trophy) guys. With their recruiting, they are doing it right. I like it.”
The Razorbacks have hosted Archer multiple times as well. Archer has already met the Hogs’ new offensive coordinator Dan Enos.
“My latest visit to Arkansas was good,” Archer stated. “I got to try on the uniform for the pictures. Coach (Sam) Pittman, I love him. He is cool. Coach Dan Enos, he’s a smart guy. With him running the offense, it sounds good. I like coach Enos and Arkansas.”
More visits are coming up for Archer mixed in with college camps.
“Texas A&M called my coach, they want me out there in July for a camp,” Archer said. “I am going to Arkansas on June 11. On June 1, I am going to Michigan for a private camp with a bunch of college coaches; it is like a mega camp.
“After that, I am going to Dallas the day after for TCU’s mega camp. About eight of our guys from school are going there. I am going to USC this summer for a camp and hopefully I will get to visit Oklahoma. I am trying to get a bunch of the colleges in this summer. I am going to the mega camps to see a bunch of colleges.”
With all the early offers and college teams wanting to wrap up their quarterbacks early in a given class, Archer was asked if he is already feeling the pressure to commit.
“Not really but kind of,” Archer shared. “Wherever I go, I want to have a good recruiting class. If I commit late in my junior year or during my senior year, I may not get the guys I want. I’m going to try to recruit the class, if that makes sense.”
