The Barry Odom effect at Arkansas continued on Monday when the Hogs new defensive coordinator extended an offer to in-state three-star linebacker/athlete JT Towers picking up the commitment from the Robinson High School standout hours later.
Before the 2019 season began, Towers was on a different track as a dual-threat quarterback for Glen Rose High School. Colliding against 3A Arkansas competition, Towers connected on 84 of 190 pass attempts for 1,331 yards with 11 touchdowns and rushed for 734 yards with 14 scores off 124 carries.
A switch in schools ahead of his senior season brought about a change in positions. Towers kept some of that offensive mindset with Little Rock’s Robinson High School completing two passes for 60 yards with a touchdown, hauling in a 14-yard pass, and rushing 27 times for 107 yards with another touchdown, but his play on defense was off the charts. In the Senators 14-1 run to a 4A state championship, their 6-4, 210-pound, linebacker racked up 171 stops, 105 solo, with 47 for a loss and 11 sacks with four forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.
Arkansas won over Towers’ commitment ahead of offers from Army, Illinois State, Louisiana-Monroe, Navy, and Tulsa. With Towers onboard, the Hogs now have 13 commitments ranked 53rd nationally by 247 Sports. The current haul is heavy towards the defensive side, 10 of the 13 commitments and/or signees are slated to stop the ball once in Fayetteville.
