ORLANDO, Fla. – Most defensive backs feel they can play any position in the back four, but few truly can. At Lake Nona High School (Orlando, Fla.) the Lions have one of those kind of players in Thomas Young. Depending on the matchup, Young (5-11, 175) can play on the outside, hang back as a free safety, or come down in the box as a strong safety. The versatility is drawing recruiting attention bolstered by an offer coming from Auburn.
Showcasing his skills, Young traveled to Tuscaloosa to impress the Crimson Tide.
“It went very well,” Young said. “Their coaches showed a lot of love. They took me on tours and showed me around their facilities. They had a coach with me almost the whole time. It was great. It was a great experience.”
Young was impressed with all that Alabama has to offer their players.
“Man, everything impressed me,” Young shared. “You hear about Alabama, and you see them on TV, it is everything you think and more. Everybody is there, they are all family, and everything is top notch. Their coaches are so nice, they will treat you so nice.”
The Blue Devils also got Young on campus this summer.
“I did hit up the Duke camp a while ago; that was really nice,” Young stated. “It was a big camp. It was good. Their coaches were nice. I had a great time. I ended up in the top five for performers in DBs; that was pretty nice.”
On May 16, Young landed his first scholarship opportunity.
“It was awesome,” Young said. “I actually have a video of it. It might have been two months ago. I was on the phone after a workout session; I went into the war room and got on the phone with their coach. We were talking a little bit; he said he liked me and then he offered me. It was exciting.”
The Tigers may get to see him on campus sooner than later.
“I’m going to try to get out to Auburn,” Young shared. “I was supposed to hit them up when I was in Alabama, but the timing just wasn’t right.”
Dates have not been set yet, but Young covered some of the game-day visits he’d like to take this fall if all works out.
“I’d love to go back to Alabama again, that was awesome,” Young stated. “I’d love to go to a game at UCF, you know, the hometown, and I would like to go to LSU.”
