The Baylor Bears were on cruise control when the 2014 college football season started winning their first five games of the season with little pushback from opponents. Game 6 came against No. 9 TCU in what turned out to be one of the best college football games of the season.
Early in the fourth quarter TCU scored back-to-back touchdowns pushing to what appeared to be a commanding 58-37 lead over No. 5 Baylor. A 7-yard touchdown run by Devin Chafin, a 28-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Petty to Antwan Goodley, and another touchdown pass from Petty, this one a 25-yard strike to Corey Coleman turned what looked a like a sure win for TCU into a 58-all tied ball game.
With four seconds left in the game Chris Callahan came onto the field nailing a 28-yard field goal attempt to complete the improbable comeback with Baylor winning 61-58.
Cut to August 2015, the Baylor players line up for team pictures. In the front row senior right guard Jarell Broxton, wearing jersey No. 61, sits next to fellow starting offensive lineman, left tackle Spencer Drango who is wearing his jersey, No. 58 front and center. All Horned Frog fans saw in the picture was “61-58”, a reminder of who won the game last season.
TCU fans looking for something to get riled up about had a field day online in chat rooms and on social media sites.
When asked if the 61-58 pairing of Broxton and Drango were intentional or coincidence, Baylor spokesperson Heath Nielsen responded with, “Weird coincidence. Hard to believe, I know.”
The mid-season showdown that played out to a 61-58 ending in McLane Stadium a year ago has been moved from October to a later date in 2015 when the Bears travel to Fort Worth to meet the Horned Frogs at Amon G. Carter Stadium on Nov. 27; the last game of the season for TCU and the second to last for Baylor.
