Throughout the 2023 high school football season, Quinn Murphy (6-3, 187) lit up Texas defenses. The Class of 2026 gunslinger not only picked apart secondaries with his arm but also emerged as capable runner who can move the chains down the field to keep drives alive. The action on the field has brought 10 offers off it, with Baylor set to host the in-state product this weekend.

Murphy’s Regents School of Austin posted a 12-2 record during his sophomore campaign. Under the Friday night lights, Murphy completed 70 percent of his passes covering 3,030 yards with a mind-blowing 52 touchdowns against just four picks. When needed, Murphy added 242 rushing yards with five more scores posted.

When the 2024 schedule kicks off, Murphy will take the field with Argyle Liberty Christian under the direction of NFL legend Jason Witten.

“I’ve had a few meetings with coach Witten,” Murphy said. “He calls the plays, he’s also the QB coach. His offense is a mix of college and NFL style playbooks; we have lots of formations. There is a good balance between the run and pass, some under center formations, quick game, and play action. There’s a lot of everything.”

Asked what it is like learning from the 11-time Pro Bowl player, Murphy replied, “It has been great. He is a great coach obviously. He’s also a personable guy to be around. He has lots of in-depth knowledge on coverages and the use of different formations. Getting to do this is special because it is not at a high school level opportunity. He’s been to the highest point you can be; I think he played for 18 years. To be coached by him is very special.”

The offseason grind includes a continuation of developing mechanics.

“I am trying to get my lower body stronger,” Murphy shared. “I am working on my hips so I can move the ball better, I’m trying to perfect my game as a player, and I am trying to work on my speed and acceleration. My goal is to be 205 by spring; the weight program is great here. I am looking to transform my body.”

With the physical comes the mental training.

“Every Wednesday the quarterbacks meet,” Murphy stated. “We go over the playbook, coverages, and we have pop quizzes to see how we are developing. We do a lot of white board work and throwing outside. Coach Witten is doing everything he can to develop us as players.”

The offer sheet is filling up with the most recent opportunities dropped by Michigan, Miami, Houston, UCF, Baylor, and SMU. More scholarship chances are lining up.

“I’m receiving interest mainly from Florida, Alabama, NC State, Michigan State, USF, Georgia, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Texas especially, and Texas A&M,” Murphy said. “Texas, Baylor, Arkansas, TCU, Michigan for sure, NC State, USF, and UCF are reaching out the most.”

After making the rounds over the fall months for game-day visits, more trips are being planned.

“I am going to Baylor this weekend for a Junior Day, and I may go to Florida the week after,” Murphy shared. “I will go on plenty of visits in the spring.”

The time with the Bears this weekend will allow Murphy to spend more time with their new offensive coordinator.

“I am excited to be around Baylor’s new offensive coordinator Jake Spavital; he’s coming from Cal,” Murphy stated. “He has coached greats like Johnny Manziel, Brandon Weeden, Case Keenum, and Geno Smith. He came down to visit me a few days ago; we had a great meeting. I like his style of offense; it is special how he does it. He has been successful everywhere he has gone. And Baylor is only an hour and a half away from home.”

The trip to Florida will be a return to Gainesville for Murphy.

“I visited there last summer as a freshman; I have built a good relationship with coach (Ryan) O’Hara (OA),” Murphy said. “I love the state of Florida. It should be exciting to visit again. It will be a great time. We have to see what comes up in this next week.”

On where all he may visit this spring, Murphy is still mapping that out.

“We have nothing figured out yet, but there are eight to 10 schools in the running that I want to go see,” Murphy added.

Before hitting the college football camp circuit this summer, Murphy will showcase his talents in 7-on-7 tournaments with Lion Hearted this offseason.
