In football, settling the debate on the field always wins out. When talking about the next wave of Arkansas high school talents set to make their mark in the 2018 class, Kam’ron Mays-Hunt is definitely in the conversation as a top in-state playmaker.

Mays-Hunt had a breakout junior season with rough stats of 1,196 yards on around 55 receptions with 10 touchdowns scored. The 5-11, 170 pound, speedster proved to be a defense killer in the open field using his speed and shiftiness to keep plays alive moving the chains down the field while putting points on the board. He also proved to be a quarterback’s best friend showing great concentration on 50-50 balls seemingly always securing the catch even in heavy traffic.

The Bentonville High School standout helped the Tigers to a 10-3 record in 2016. The Tigers have been one of the top teams in the state of Arkansas in the highest level of classification, 7A, over the last decade helping college coaches appreciate Mays-Hunt’s growing talents. The interest phase of the recruiting process for Mays-Hunt is sure to turn into the offer phase as the off-season camp circuit kicks up allowing recruits from across the country to showcase their skills against other top talents. The teams showing early interest that could turn into early offers from Mays-Hunt includes Arkansas, Memphis, Arkansas State, Texas State, LSU, and Ole Miss.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview I sat down with Mays-Hunt going over his junior season while getting an overview on his off-season plans.

Interview

Kam’ron, Bentonville was once again one of the better teams in the state of Arkansas during the 2016 season. How did you prepare for your junior campaign?

“I prepared with a lot of route running and working on getting out of my breaks. I wanted to prepare myself for Tre Norwood (Class of 2017 CB from Northside). I knew we would meet up (met in second round of the playoffs, Bentonville won 31-10). I did a lot of route running, conditioning, and lifting weights.”

How did your game grow on the field?

“In 2015, I played slot receiver. There was not that much man-to-man in the slot. This year I was at Z. This year I was against a lot of man-to-man coverage and I did well. I was running past people. There is a difference in playing slot and on the outside. In the slot I was going against linebackers and safeties. I worked a lot on getting off press coverage and on my release over the summer. Coach Washington works with us about finding the hole, getting into the triangle, and learning how to sit in that hole between the coverage so you don’t get popped by a linebacker. I am bad on drifting.”

Will you make a position move next season?

“Yeah, next year I will play both ways, corner and wide receiver. But things change, new players move in so we’ll see.”

What are your off-season goals?

“I’m going to the Nike Opening Regional. I want to do well there. Colleges look at that. I want to get to 4.45 on my 40-yard dash and get my weight around 180 pounds.”

Which schools are showing interest in you?

“Arkansas, they have invited me on a visit. I went there during my junior summer. I’ve gone on game day invites to Arkansas too. Arkansas State may want me for both (corner and receiver). My coaches said Memphis has talked to them about me.”

Did you take any visits last season?

“I took a lot. I went on four. I went to Arkansas, Texas State, LSU, and Ole Miss.”

From all the visits you took, was there anything that helped you understand the college game a little bit more?

“It is a very fast paced game in college, way faster than high school ball. The corners are bigger. You have to work off that press release. Their presses are very aggressive at that level.”

Kam’ron, what is your cumulative GPA?

“I have a 2.9.”

Are you playing any winter or spring sports for Bentonville?

“Yes. Baseball and basketball.”

How is basketball going?

“It is going pretty good. We stated off slow but our chemistry is getting better and now we are starting to win.”

Do you know what your stat line in basketball?

“I’m more of a defensive player and a rebounder.”

I know you are a big time baseball player. Which travel team do you play for during the off-season?

“My travel team is the EI Sticks out of Little Rock.”

Which positions do you play for El Sticks?

“Short stop, everywhere in the outfield, and pitcher.”

Are you getting any college baseball interests?

“I’m getting interest from Arkansas, Arkansas State, and Wichita State.”

Do you have any baseball offers yet?

“Not yet.”

Which sport do you like better, baseball or football?

“I like them both about the same.”

Kam’ron, thanks for your time today and good luck with your off-season workouts.

“Thank you.”
