Everything wrapped around the player that is Wilbert Angelle is positive. The upside for Angelle is through the proverbial roof after a sophomore season showcasing his raw abilities for Houston Heights High School. The 6-1, 300-pound, defensive tackle has a knack for making plays racking up 20 tackles with two sacks during the 2017 campaign that was shortened to nine games due to inclement weather. Opposing 6A Texas squads may hope for another shortened season after all the hard work Angelle is putting in on his game during the offseason. It seems another storm is coming wearing No. 92 on his jersey.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with one of the rising Class of 2020 talents in the Lone Star State covering his sophomore season and offseason goals.

Interview

Wilbert, when did you crack the varsity roster for the Bulldogs?

“During my freshman year, our coach was talking to me about possibly needing me to play some varsity ball. He said, ‘you are a big guy and very talented.’ He said, ‘I deserved to be in the lineup.’ I came close then, but made it officially my sophomore year.”

You play with a lot of strength to your game, what are your weight room maxes?

“Yes, sir. My bench max is 275, squat is 400, and my hang clean is 235.”

How did your game at defensive tackle develop last season?

“At the beginning of the season I got better. I got stronger and pushed guys back and make tackles.”

Was there an offensive lineman that challenged you last year, if so, how did that help improve your game?

“One of Bellaire’s guards, he challenged me. He showed me how much strength and skill I had to play with to help my team win.”

Which game was your best last season?

“My best game against Westbury. I made a lot of plays in that game. I showed how much I had improved throughout the season.”

Of your skillset, what do you consider the strengths of your game?

“My footwork, I’ve been working on that a lot. My strength is pretty good. My hand-placement is another strength, my coach works on me with that. We work on different moves. Helps me with pass rush too.”

What are you working on this offseason?

“This offseason, I am working on my footwork, getting faster, and being more disciplined with my technique.”

Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you?

“Houston and Cincinnati.”

Do you have any planned visits you might take upcoming?

“Houston and I am trying to go to Cincinnati. I would like to visit Tulsa and Texas A&M as well.”

Have you attended any camps or combines this offseason?

“I am going to U.S.A. camp and camps with SMU, Texas, and Houston.”

What goals have you set for yourself before the 2018 season begins?

“I want to be more explosive. I want to increase my tackle total this season. I want to improve on my discipline. I don’t want to be considered an average player when the 2018 season ends.”

Wilbert, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts and upcoming camps.

“Thank you.”
