EMERSON, Ga. – Anytime and anywhere, that is the mentality one picks up quickly from John Gentry. The rising 2024 receiver out of Texas’ Cedar Ridge High School (Round Rock) has traveled all around the Lone Star State and beyond showcasing his skills catching attention along the way. Three offers have been extended with new interest coming in after mega camp performances at SMU and TCU, and a showcasing run at NXGN TheShow over the weekend in Georgia.
Beyond being a big receiver, 6-4, 205, Gentry sells his routes, is a very good blocker downfield, and has the wingspan and hands next level scouts desire. His skills are a fit in the Raiders’ offense.
“Me being 6-4, I have a 4.5 40, I run go-balls, posts, and I’m quick in and out of my breaks,” Gentry shared. “I can break them off on a comeback, run a dig, and in the end zone, if they put it up in the air, I am coming down with it.”
Word is starting to get out on the hidden gem. Colorado School of Mines, Northwest Oklahoma, and North American have handed over offers. Teams showing interest were listed.
“Wyoming, Air Force, Lafayette, there’s a lot of teams in my DMs right now,” Gentry said.
The mega camps have helped Gentry get noticed.
“I was at SMU, I did really well there,” Gentry stated. “At TCU, I talked to a lot of coaches there like Louisiana Tech, Midwestern, Air Force, Wyoming, and Kent State. I hit those big mega camps.”
In addition to the SMU and TCU camps, Gentry has competed at Incarnate Word, Texas Permian Basin, and Angleo State. Some visits were added into the mix.
“Colorado Mines, I went over to Oklahoma, and I was just at Morehouse; there’s been a lot,” Gentry shared. “I have done a lot of traveling this summer.”
Another round of showcase opportunities is coming this month.
“Coming up in July, I am hitting Midwestern, Northwest, and I’m either going to UNC or Texas State; I’m trying to figure out which one,” Gentry stated. “I will go to SMU and that will wrap it up for the summer.”
Gentry continued, “During the season, teams want to see what I look like fully on the field. After the first few games, I will get that (film) out to them. I plan to get out to some campuses and see some games and go from there.”
Off the field, Gentry is getting it done in the classroom.
“I have a 3.68 GPA,” Gentry said. “I’m on my academics. I enjoy math, English, science – all of that stuff.”
From his junior campaign with the Raiders, Gentry was credited with 11 receptions covering 225 yards with three trips into the end zone.
