Bryce Backus will soon be a Division-I quarterback, the only question is where. The Class of 2027 prospect has a college ready arm and the wheels to move the chains. As Backus (6-3.5, 197) progresses on the field, college coaches across the country are starting to pay attention. With an offer down from Toledo, new interest is piling up.

Perfecting the craft continues through the winter months in Michigan.

“The offseason has been fun,” Backus stated. “It has been a lot; I have basketball too. Last month I worked out after school, then had basketball practice, and then I would watch film at night or have a throwing session.”

Backus continued, “I’m trying to work on my footwork and getting my throwing mechanics consistent. I started playing QB at the end of 8th grade, I am still trying to build and get better. I am working on developing more velocity on the ball and being more consistent.”

Weekend 7-on-7 tournaments are helping Backus fine tune the skills.

“I am playing with Rising Stars out of Detroit,” Backus shared. “We just competed in a tournament. I will be playing with Rising Stars this weekend and I have another tournament coming up in April.”

The Caledonia High School (Caledonia) rising star took his talents to Los Angeles this winter for an Elite 11 camp.

“It went pretty well,” Backus said. “It was fun meeting a lot of new people from everywhere. It is always fun to compete. There was a lot of learning. They went over new drills you can take home with you; they did a really good job. It was fun to compete against good quarterbacks.”

All the activity coupled with the 2024 game film is bringing college coaches to the Fighting Scots’ campus.

“In January we had Minnesota come visit, Toledo, Central (Michigan), and Western (Michigan),” Backus shared. “I am going to Minnesota, Georgia Tech, Toledo (Thursday), Central Michigan, and hopefully out to MSU (Michigan State).”

Getting to see the Yellow Jackets practice is a draw to Atlanta.

“I’ve been to Atlanta before; I love the city,” Backus stated. “I’ve talked to their coach there a few times; he seems great. I want to see how they practice, and I want to see the campus. I can’t wait.”

On getting to hang with the Golden Gophers, Backus replied, “They came here. Coach (Greg) Harbaugh Jr. (OC/QB) came to my school. It was nice meeting him for the first time. I can’t wait to go see how they run everything. I talked to him for a decent amount of time. I can’t wait to see how they run everything.”

More college visits are coming up with an eye on summer college camps.

“I am going on bus tour with Rising Stars,” Backus said. “We are going to 13 different colleges: Vanderbilt, WVU, some MAC schools, Marshall, Tennessee, and Indiana. I will see how everything goes over the next couple of months, see how spring practices go, for camps in June.”
