ORLANDO, Fla. – When you are as athletic as Jermichael Gillis, high school football teams will find a way to let you impact any given game. During his sophomore season, Gillis (6-1, 170) produced in all three phases of the game for Orlando’s Bishop Moore High School (Fla.). When the Friday night lights turn on this fall, Maryland’s St. Frances Academy will get to utilize his skillset. Seeing him at safety or corner, receiver or on special teams, next level scouts will be watching Gillis’ every move.
Rolling in the back-four for the Panthers, Gillis has high goals set for himself.
“I am trying to get more picks this year, I am going for 10 picks this year,” Gillis said. “I have been working and grinding; I’ve been working out every day. With my skills, I am working on being rangier. They call me a ballhawk, when I run across the field, I have to be rangy to get the ball in the air. I do work on my hips a lot and I work on my pedal. I pedal every single day.”
Working his way up to 13 offers, LSU, Colorado, UCF, and Michigan are among the latest to present scholarship opportunities. The schools showing interest were listed.
“Georgia, Alabama, Clemson, Arkansas, and I have been staying in touch with Illinois,” Gillis stated.
Playing in Big Ten country this fall, one of the powerhouses in that region has Gillis’ attention.
“I only took one visit this summer, that was to Ohio State,” Gillis shared. “I am going to go back again before the summer ends.”
Gillis spoke about his time in Columbus, “It went great. Coach Perry (Eliano – DB) showed a lot of interest and a lot of love to me. We are building a good rapport.”
Two SEC teams are working their way onto Gillis’ upcoming travel schedule.
“I am going back to Tennessee, Ohio State, and LSU,” Gillis stated.
The Volunteers are one of the early leaders in the clubhouse for Gillis.
“We have a good-good relationship,” Gillis said. “They are one of my top schools right now. I love them. We keep building that relationship.”
A trip to Baton Rouge would help bond the coaching staff and prized recruit.
“I haven’t been talking to them that much, but when we have talked it has been good,” Gillis shared. “I will keep going off that.”
Nothing has been set yet, but two SEC squads could host Gillis during the season.
“I’m not sure where I will go yet, but I want to visit Alabama and Georgia,” Gillis stated.
