Bad news for one California high school team maybe a Christmas day for a Texas high school program. For the second time in his high school career, 4-star offensive tackle Chuck Filiaga is transferring programs.
Filiaga started his high school career off at St. Augustine in the San Diego area leaving the program for Vista Murrieta beginning his sophomore season. As a freshman, Filiaga played his way into a starter as a 6’6”, 275 pound, defensive end. Once with the Broncos, Coach Coley Candaele saw Filaga’s potential as a next level offensive tackle. Two years later and Filiaga has over 20 reported offers with at least 10 others unreported. The 6’6”, 330 pound, talent has offers from USC, UCLA, TCU, Baylor, Arkansas, Tennessee, Oregon, Oklahoma, Arizona State, Washington, and Ole Miss to name a few.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, Filiaga discussed his announced transfer to Texas.
Interview
Chuck, I understand today is a big day for you to announce something. What’s the big news?
“I’m moving to Texas. I’ve talked to our new head coach (David Olson) about it on Tuesday and releasing the information today.
How did Coach Olson take the news?
“He didn’t take it very lightly. As a new head coach he was making plans with the o-line and me as well. Now that I’m going to Texas he has to change all these great plans. He told me how much he would have loved to coach me this year. He is allowing me to get workouts in with the team. They want the best for me and I appreciate it a lot.”
Do you know where in Texas you might be moving to yet?
“I don’t know the area yet. I talked to my mom about Southlake Carrol (Southlake, Texas) today.”
So Southlake Carrol High School is a possibility as a team you would play for in 2015?
“Yeah, that’s a possibility.”
Southlake is basically north of Arlington. Do you know which area in the Fort Worth/Arlington/Dallas area you guys are moving to coming up?
“I think we’ll be in Fort Worth but I’m not sure which area yet.”
Have you talked to the Southlake Carrol coaches yet?
“No. I don’t know if my mom has talked to them yet or not.”
When do you officially move?
“I don’t know yet. I’m trying to find out from my parents.”
Switching gears, I just saw you at the Nike Opening Los Angeles regional. How did the camp go for you?
“At the Nike camp, I did alright. It was not my best day technique wise and with my physicality. I’m trying to get back into football shape after playing basketball. I’ve been working hard since the camp and I’m already seeing a better performance in four days. If I were to go back to the Nike camp based on how I am playing now, I would kick butt. Now I am focused on doing well at the Rivals camp.”
The Nike camp was your first camp of the offseason and getting back into the swing of everything. A lot of guys are rusty right now.
“Yeah.”
Chuck, good luck with your upcoming move and good luck at the Rivals camp coming up.
“Thank you.”
