Senior seasons are often statement seasons, especially on the gridiron. For Maurice Harrell, the 2024 defensive back is locked in and ready to prove to next level scouts he’s a difference maker that will help win games. Newton High School (Covington, Ga.) is going to get all that Harrell has this fall.
The mission statement for Harrell (6-1, 155) is straightforward and achievable.
“This is my year,” Harrell said. “I am coming for the offers and everything. This will be my year.”
The Rams have Harrell moving around the secondary depending on the opponent and game situation.
“I will be playing corner and maybe some at safety,” Harrell stated.
Harrell continued covering the Rams’ style of play on defense.
“We run a little man-to-man, some Cover 3 and 4, a little bit of one side Cover 3 and the other side man-to-man,” Harrell shared. “We run a lot of mixed coverages.”
To make the goals a reality, energy has been put into his game this summer.
“I have been working on my kick slide, my jam at the release, my press man, off-man, my technique, getting in and out of my breaks quicker, and staying low in my transitions,” Harrell said. “The one main thing I’ve been working on is getting bigger.”
Providing a sneak peek of the coming attractions, Harrell took his talents to the Southern Exposure Camp in Georgia.
“It went pretty well,” Harrell stated. “I showcased a lot of my talents there so people know what I am coming with this season. At the camp I showcased being able to stay low in my backpedal, my hips, getting in and out of my turns, my jam at the line, and staying in front of the receivers. I was getting a lot of breakups.”
In addition to competing in 7-on-7 college-held camps this summer, Harrell worked out with the Oklahoma Sooners staff.
“It went well,” Harrell shared. “I feel that I impressed their coaches; I am in touch with them now. They gave me their contact info and said if I need them to contact them. They said I can contact them.”
While in Norman, Harrell visited with the Sooners but also took trips spending time with Florida, UCF, and Morehouse. While in Atlanta, Harrell also camped with the Tigers.
Down in Orlando, Harrell was building ties with the Knights’ staff.
“It was pretty good,” Harrell said. “UCF has a good environment; I liked it. I got in touch with their coaches, they have a good academic program in the field that I am pursing (construction and business management); I have been looking at them.”
The Gators saw Harrell on campus for their spring game.
“Florida was a pretty good visit,” stated. “I went to the Orange and Blue game; they had a good environment. I loved The Swamp. The guys looked good out there.”
