College teams are already liking what they are seeing in Travis Smith, but the best is yet to come. Six teams have jumped on the big 2025 receiver for Atlanta’s Westlake High School early, and that list will rapidly draw company with a change in the Lions’ offense for the upcoming season.
The 6-4, 195-pound, receiver broke down his new role in the Lions’ 2023 offensive scheme.
“I am definitely excited about playing the “X” this year,” Smith said. “This year, I will be the No. 1 guy. I am the No. 1 look, that’s what we saw at spring practice, and I like that. I like that “X” position; I am looking forward to it.”
The change in offensive focus was covered.
“We will be more of an Air Raid offense this year,” Smith stated. “It is a change from last year when we were a run-first offense. We are airing it out this year. I will have a lot more looks. It will be great.”
The opportunity to shine is not lost on Smith this offseason.
“I am working on my craft and my footwork,” Smith shared. “With me being big and lengthy, I need that quick speed and footwork. I am working on my routes. After practice I am working with my QB on routes and timing. The guys I train with, they train NFL and college guys. Jonathan Mingo (Carolina Panthers), I just trained with him the other day.”
The big Division-I offers are already coming to Smith.
“I have six offers from Arkansas State, Utah, Maryland, Boston College, Duke, and most recently I got Ole Miss,” Smith said. “I got Ole Miss on Thursday.”
Two SEC programs are showing heavy interest.
“Auburn and Florida, they are showing a lot of interest,” Smith stated. “Louisville and JSU (Jackson State), they came by my school and talked to me a little bit.”
The Gators brought Smith to Gainesville this spring.
“It went well,” Smith said. “I went into the meeting room while they were getting ready for practice. I got a great feel for the place. That is definitely a place I will consider for the future. Florida is a beautiful place, I liked it.”
The Hurricanes also welcomed Smith to campus. A couple of games into the 2023 season, Smith could have an offer from Miami.
“It was great,” Smith shared. “The only thing with that, I was expecting the offer, but they want to see more aggressiveness on my side. They are challenging me to be more aggressive. If I was more aggressive, I would have had a scholarship offer from Miami.”
Future visits may take Smith outside of the Sunshine State.
“I am planning on visiting Wake Forest, Tennessee, and we have been talking about going to Louisville,” Smith stated.
Another SEC team may see Smith this summer competing at one of their camps.
“Besides the visit and camp with Wake Forest, they just contacted my dad and I to visit and camp, I’m wanting to go to LSU too to see what they are talking about,” Smith said. “There’s some good competition over there.”
