A good dilemma may be coming down the line for Cal Golden Bears head coach Sonny Dykes, offensive coordinator Tony Franklin, and defensive coordinator Art Kaufman when Class of 2016 verbal commit Evan Weaver finally gets on campus. The 6’3”, 240 pound, athlete is a defensive end recruit but is now also tearing it up as a running back adding another dimension to his potential at the collegiate level.

Easy to blame Gonzaga Prep head coach David McKenna for the problem but who could really blame him? Weaver is a natural athlete able to dominate at multiple positions against Washington high school football teams. Week after week, Weaver seemingly has double-digit tackles, a handful of tackles for a loss, a couple of sacks, and 50 to 100 yards rushing with at least one touchdown scored on limited carries. McKenna’s idea of putting his star athlete in the backfield has paid off seeing the Bullpups streak out to an 8-0 start on the season.

The Spokane area team was challenged early in the season against Richland (13-10) and Bellarmine Prep (34-28 in OT) but have trampled over the rest of the competition with the closest margin of victory since being a 23 point win over Central Valley (35-13).

Cal fans and the Golden Bears staff may also see Weaver’s potential to play the H-back position or as a hybrid fullback after watching his just released late season highlight reel. Early in the reel Weaver knocks a linebacker on his backside as a lead blocker and pulls in a swing pass for a nice gain… a great dilemma to have on the Cal coach staff.

The Bullpups have two more games left against Ferris and Walla Walla before heading off to the playoffs in search of a state championship.

*Update

Evan finished his senior campaign on defense with 125 tackles, 37 tackles for a loss, 24 sacks, one interception, five forced fumbles, two safeties. On offense he had 933 yards, sporting a 6.1 yards per carry average, and score 17 touchdowns.

Evan was named first team All-State for his stellar play in 2015.
