Steals on the college football recruiting trail can come in more than one way. Some coaches are lucky to keep an under the radar recruit with massive talent hidden from the masses while others can attract prospects with a big upside to walk-on. When Mississippi State signed Class of 2017 quarterback Robbie Blosser, they somehow managed to double down sneaking a gunslinger out of California.

Blosser helped Salesian High School to a 6-6 record in 2016 dissecting the opposition for 2,500 passing yards with 27 touchdowns against just five interceptions. His 72 percent completion percentage was impressive but knowing the 6-2, 201 pound, playmaker did it all in just six games of action is astonishing.

The limited action for Blosser due to a sprain kept colleges away but not the Bulldogs. MSU sought out Blosser keeping him away from preferred walk-on options by San Diego State, Montana State, and Rice. The timid reaction on the trail by other coaches is a big win for MSU head coach Dan Mullen and staff.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Blosser to get the story on how his recruitment with Mississippi State played out and how his commitment came to be.

Interview

Robbie, which schools were in touch with you as National Signing Day neared?

“I had preferred walk-on offers from San Diego State, Montana State, and Rice came in at the end asking for all of my stuff. At the end of the day, Mississippi State was showing the most attention. Coach (Terrell) Buckley, he recruits my area, we got to know one another well when I was at Salesian. When I visited Starkville I felt at home. It felt like a family there. They are giving me every opportunity to compete for playing time. I could not pass that up.”

What did you do on your official visit to MSU?

“When we got there, we went to dinner with Coach Mullen. I spent a lot of time talking to him about the offense. He talked about everything I can do within their offense and what he can bring to the table as a coach. He spoke about how he can develop me as a quarterback. He does a great job developing quarterbacks, which we took into consideration. The facilities there were great. That was a turning point for my decision to go to college.”

Opportunity for playing time and a family atmosphere at MSU, was there anything else that influenced you to take your talents to Starkville?

“Coming from LA, I wanted to experience something different. I like the south. Going to Mississippi State will be a different experience. Being in the MSU environment, Starkville is what I was looking for. They love football there. It is a really good college town.

“On the academics side, I did not know what to expect. They showed use the academic programs and all the alumni connections they have there. That helped my decision. That was something I really liked knowing how good the academics are there.”

How did the commitment take place?

“I was getting ready to leave on Sunday (Jan. 29). I was with Coach Mullen for about an hour covering all the things I would need to do if I went there and with him letting me know if I come here that they would work me harder than I have ever worked before. He promised he would work hard to develop me. Coach Mullen saying that I will have an opportunity to compete was key. I knew that is where I wanted to be. He wants everyone to work hard. He is a great motivator bringing everyone together.”

When did you actually commit?

“I knew then on Sunday but I did it on Tuesday. I announced later that night. I had to make sure my parents were on board.”

When you called to commit, who did you call?

“I called Coach Buckley before I announced it. They were about to have a meeting. I talked to Coach Mullen too. Coach Mullen asked me ‘are you ready to be a Bulldog and get to work?’ I said, ‘yes.’ I’m ready to start there in June.”

Did the coaches give you anything to work on this off-season?

“Coach Mullen said to start running every day. They are going to send a playbook with formations for me to start learning. They want me to get ready for the first week in June. That’s when I start.”

What has been the most memorable part of NSD for you?

“The most memorable part for sure is realizing that I have this opportunity to compete at a top program. I’m following my dream to play college football at a top program. Realizing this opportunity and that I can take this opportunity and run with it is great.”

Robbie, thanks for your time today and good luck at Mississippi State.

“Thank you.”
