Stepping into the pocket for a Trinity League team carries a lot of weight, especially at Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Cali.). The Monarchs are one of the nation’s most storied programs achieving great heights under former head coach Bruce Rollinson with a long list of QB greatness that has matriculated through its halls. Mater Dei is set under center for the 2023 schedule but is grooming Furian Inferrera (6-3, 190) to be one of their next greats.
Earning a starting spot at Mater Dei means something within the Golden State and among college coaches across the country. The Monarchs are the only high school football program to produce three Heisman Trophy winners (Bryce Young, John Huarte, and Matt Leinart) and routinely develop five- and four-star quarterbacks.
Getting the nod to lead the Monarchs’ offense is also the pathway to longevity in the role with Elijah Brown (Stanford) entering the 2023 season as a four-year starter preceded by five-stars Bryce Young (Alabama) and J.T. Daniels (USC).
Preparing for the backup role to Brown on the varsity squad and as a leader on the freshman team, Inferrera spoke about his offseason grind.
“I am always trying to get bigger, faster, and stronger,” Inferrera said. “I’m also improving my mental side of the game. It is important to be balanced. I am also working on my escape-ability in the pocket and navigating in the pocket.”
The style of offense executed was explained, “We run a Spread offense. Occasionally we can go with a tight end set, but we like to stay in a spread.”
Part of the offseason workouts was taking on high caliber competition in 7-on-7 tournaments.
“I played with California Power a little bit,” Inferrera stated. “I played with them when we went to Battle Las Vegas.”
Extra tutelage has come from QB coach Drew Aumavae. All the work combined is showing signs of great improvement.
“I have always been a pretty good pocket passer, and I have been working on my athleticism in and out of the pocket, I am really well rounded now in my attack,” Inferrera shared.
The 2027 quarterback ran down the list of camp performances this summer.
“I went to USC, UCLA, San Diego State, and Arizona camps,” Inferrera said. “I also went to a couple other camps; I went to the NexGen regional in SoCal. I was the MVP of that camp, and I was invited to Under the Radar’s Straight Baller Camp.”
Top camp performances were turned in at USC and UCLA. Inferrera spoke about spinning in front of those Pac-12 coaches, “The ball never touched the floor once that day. Any spot I wanted, I was fitting it – back shoulders, fades, all of them. I was really successful completing all my passes at those two camps.”
Inferrera continued, “I was pulled aside at UCLA by coach (Ryan) Gunderson (QB) and Mikey Jacobsen (GA); they pulled me aside. At USC, two coaches talked to me afterwards.”
Both coaching staffs had positive feedback for Inferrera.
“They said I am a great player, that I am really talented, and they will keep their eyes on me,” Inferrera shared. “They said once I get my varsity film, they really want to see my varsity film.”
Inferrera got outside of the LA powerhouses this offseason checking out another Pac-12 squad with stops in Big Ten and SEC territories.
“Nebraska, they invited me up for their spring game,” Inferrera stated. “That whole weekend, their staff showed great hospitality; that is when I was offered by them. I also visited Texas A&M and toured at Arizona.”
Seeing the talent and the immense upside, five teams have already offered Inferrera: Boston College, Hawaii, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, and Utah Tech. The first offer came from the Panthers.
“That was amazing,” Inferrera shared. “It was a dream come true. I was in the seventh grade going into my eighth-grade year; I am blessed to have it.”
Those offers are lining up to have some company.
“Arizona is showing interest,” Inferrera said. “I heard from my coach at Mater Dei that they are looking at me. USC and UCLA are showing interest. I have a lot of coaches following me on Twitter: Maryland, Clemson, Georgia, Marshall, Miami, Michigan State, Georgia State, Cornell, FAU, Stanford, FSU, BYU, Texas, and Alabama.”
