Nothing brings more recruiting interest than a fresh offer on the table. College coaches near and far perk up like the dinner bell has been rung after a long day at work racing towards the fresh bit of recruiting news. If said school thinks enough to offer said recruit, something worth looking into must be there. This is the rising scenario for Antioch High School’s Issac Freytes.
Freytes started garnering attention during his junior season helping the Panthers to an 11-1 mark before a tough 55-54 loss to Foothill High School in the California playoffs. Through eight games, Freytes shinned on both sides of the ball at wide receiver and at free safety. On offense, Freytes finished with 12 receptions for 200 yards with two scores and on defense he had 11 tackles with one pass broken up.
Stats do not tell the whole story for Freytes. In the run game, he is a willing blocker enjoying planting linebackers on crack-back blocks. When the ball is thrown his way, his 6’1”, 194 pound, frame allows him to drag defenders for extra yards showing grit and determination to put six on the board. Freytes has good speed, a great frame, adjusts well to the ball in the air, and is a willing hitter stopping the run.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with the rising Class of 2017 star to get his thoughts on his play in 2014, found out how his offseason workouts are going, and got the inside scoop on his offer from BYU.
Interview
Issac, first, congratulations on receiving an offer from BYU.
“Thanks.”
Before we get into the recruiting part of the interview, I have to ask you about the crack blocks you unload on linebackers. It looks like you enjoy doing that.
“Crack blocks are fun. I like them. When they give them to me I take advantage of it. I lay it down the best that I can.”
Have you guys wrapped up spring ball yet?
“We just finished today (Wednesday).”
How does the team look going into the 2016 season?
“I don’t know. We seem really good and I think we are getting better every day.”
How did the spring session go for you personally?
“I started out real good from track to football. Running track helped me out a lot.”
Will your role or position on the team change next season?
“It is staying same but I’ll get some time in at running back as well.”
Are you excited to play running back next year?
“It is in more of a wing-set, but I am excited.”
You played well at wide receiver and free safety last year. Between the two, which position is your best?
“I can’t say. I don’t know. I do like playing both positions.”
What are you working on in the offseason?
“Definitely my lateral movement and my speed, and moving my hips for difficult catches.”
You mentioned your speed, have you ran a 40-yard dash this offseason?
“I have not ran a 40.”
You mentioned running track, which track events did you tackle?
“I ran the 400, 200, and the 100.”
Which even is your best?
“My best event is probably the 200.”
What is your best time in the 200?
“22.24.”
What is your best in the 100?
“11.5.”
What are some of the skills you bring to the field as a wide receiver?
“Definitely my upper body strength and my physicality. Most defensive backs are not use to my strength.”
What about at free safety?
“Definitely baiting the quarterback. I’m good at making it seem like I am not in the play.”
What do you do better as a safety, covering the pass or stopping the run?
“I’m good at coming down hill. If the ball is in the air I’m going to get it.”
How did the BYU offer come around for you?
“At first I had reached out to them on Twitter. I sent my highlight tape to them. Coach (Jenaro) Gilford came to my school recently. When we started talking he realized who I was. He checked out my transcripts and they offered.”
Which position did they offer you to play?
“Both positions.”
Which other schools are showing interest in you?
“UNLV, Cal-Poly, and Montana.”
Have you line up camps for this summer yet?
“I’m going to UNLV on June 12. I’m going to Cal-Poly on a visit and maybe a camp, but I’m not sure about Montana yet. I’m attending the Golden Gate camp on June 19 and I’m going to a Utah camp June 17-18 with a bunch of other colleges there.”
Have you taken any unofficial visits yet?
“I took one to USC and UCLA, and I’ve been to Cal and UC-Davis.”
What is your GPA right now?
“I have a 3.3.”
What is your favorite subject in school?
“U.S. History.”
What degree are you thinking about pursing in college?
“I’m thinking about a business degree.”
Issac, thanks for your time today and good luck at all the upcoming camps.
“Thank you.”
