VENICE, Fla. – At Florida powerhouse high school football program Venice, there is a do-all tailback flying under the radar in Alvin Johnson. More than a scat-back logging 205 carries during his junior campaign, Johnson can plow between the tackles, hit the outside, and contribute in the passing attack. Four teams have offered with a big visit to Charleston Southern on Thursday.
The Buccaneers are one of the offering teams for Johnson (5-10.5, 170) along with Bethune-Cookman, Tennessee Tech, and Eastern Kentucky. Once the 2023 schedule gets going, the 2024 prospect has teams watching.
“Appalachian State, there are a few I can’t think of right now that are showing interest, SIU (Southern Illinois), Coastal Carolina, and UCF has been talking to me,” Johnson said.
This week, Johnson is taking a trip up to South Carolina to hang with the Buccaneers, a trip Johnson is looking forward to taking.
“I am going to a Charleston camp on Thursday,” Johnson stated. “I’m very excited to go so I can see what the campus and everything looks like.”
The Buccaneers’ staff is in everyday kind of contact with their targeted running back.
“Our relationship is good,” Johnson shared. “They reach out to me a lot to see how I am doing and to see how I am doing after practice.”
Chances are Charleston Southern will see Johnson again on Sept. 9.
“I want to go to Charleston this fall because they are playing Clemson,” Johnson said. “I want to see what that is like; that will be a big environment.”
Johnson was a workhorse for the Indians last season toting the rock 205 times for 951 yards with 11 touchdowns posted. On passing downs, Johnson hauled in 14 for 106 more yards with two more scores. Venice also used him on kick returns taking two back 49 yards.
