Another big season is ahead for Homestead High School taking on South Florida opponents. With big aspirations heading into the 2023 season, dynamic playmaker Cortez Mills will be there to help lead the charge for the Broncos.
Inside or outside, nasty releases, speed, and sure-fire hands, Mills (6-1, 175) brings the package to the field. Not wanting to hang on his four-star recruiting status, Mills has been amping up his game this summer.
“I have been working on getting in and out of my breaks, and being consistent,” Mills stated. “I have been focused in the weight room; I am trying to get bigger. This offseason, I have put a lot of work in the weight room; I am taking that more seriously.”
One of the top-rated players in the 2025 class at his position, Mills will get an opportunity to catch the opposition’s passes this fall.
“I am getting some free safety work in this season,” Mills shared. “My DB coach told me during clutch time to be ready. I will be back there getting some interceptions.”
Comparing himself against the rest, Mills was asked what do you feel separates you from others in the skill department?
“Even though I have height, I can also play slot, I can run any route, I always get open, I always get separation, and my deep ball catching, it is insane,” Mills said.
The Florida Gators and South Carolina Gamecocks are among the interested programs with 28 offers in-hand for Mills. The teams making contact were listed, “Clemson, Florida State, UCF, Miami, Louisville, and Nebraska – I can’t remember them all right now.”
Miami was one of two to see Mills on their campus this summer.
“That visit was great,” Mills shared. “As soon as I stepped on the campus, they were treating me like family. They showed love to me and my family.”
More insight into that relationship was divulged, “Right now, coach (Mario) Cristobal and I have a great bond. He treats me like a son when I am on campus. We have connected.”
The Tigers did not disappoint while Mills was in South Carolina.
“That one was good as well,” Mills said. “It was great. When I first got there, they took me on a tour; I camped that day. I saw their facilities, it was nice. I destroyed the camp. After the camp, they took me on another tour. They were showing love towards me and my family; it was great. I talked to all the coaches.”
A busy game-day schedule is in the works for Mills.
“During the season I am going to Nebraska, FSU, the Florida Gators, Miami, Louisville, Penn State, and Texas A&M,” Mills stated.
