Getting in early with a budding top recruit is never a bad thing to do and the plan worked out to perfection for Clemson on Monday landing a commitment from 4-star cornerback LeAnthony Williams Jr.
Williams was part of a stingy Hornets defense that helped Roswell roll through the 2015 Georgia high school football season until colliding with another powerhouse, Colquitt County, in the state championship game. The Hornets went 14-1 last season but are absolutely loaded on both sides of the ball headed into the 2016. One of the many high profile talents on the squad is Williams.
Williams, listed at 6’0”, 170 pounds, held the proverbial island coming up with 40 tackles, 32 solo, three tackles for a loss, and three interceptions during his junior campaign. College coaches loved the talent, skill set, and athleticism Williams displays on the field with over 20 offers extended. Some of the schools seeking his talents include LSU, Ole Miss, Florida, Auburn, Georgia, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Miami, and Kentucky.
The Tigers got on Williams early offering him in July of 2015 before his junior season. The race seemed to be down to Clemson and Notre Dame with Williams attending Notre Dame’s Junior Day on Jan. 23 and Clemson’s Junior Day on Jan. 30.
Clemson has been aggressive early on the recruiting trail with eight verbal commitments already landed for the 2017 class. Of the eight, five are considered 5- and 4-star recruits. Also, of the eight, six are from different states showing the growing recruiting net head coach Dabo Swinney and staff are casting out nationally as the program continues to grow into one of the elite units in the nation.
