There is a buzz in the state of Illinois along the recruiting trail that resonates loudly out of Maine South High School (Park Ridge). The chatter off the Hawks’ gridiron centers around 2027 quarterback Jameson Purcell. The 6-2, 181-pound, QB is in an open competition for varsity snaps taking the field with five scholarship offers in hand.
The strong-armed gunslinger has been offered by UAB, South Florida, Ole Miss, Auburn, and Western Kentucky. Interest is brewing.
“Michigan, I have been there a couple of times; I really liked it,” Purcell said. “I have kept in contact with the coaches there. Purdue is showing interest in me. We went there about a month ago for a private workout, that went really well. Texas A&M is showing a lot of interest too.”
Teams throughout the region are ready to see Purcell’s 2023 game film.
“We run a Spread offense,” Purcell stated. “We do a lot in the run game, RPOs (run-pass option), and we like to pass the ball.”
When Purcell drops back, the offense allows him to showcase the physical and mental aspects of being a high-profile player.
“We do a lot of different concepts, smash concepts, reading high-low, looking on the inside, if a blitz is coming, we throw the seam; we have a pretty balanced offense,” Purcell shared.
When the opportunity comes to take on Illinois high school competition, Purcell will be ready.
“I have been working with my varsity receivers to get in rhythm with them,” Purcell said. “The biggest thing has been being consistent with my footwork and the footwork with the plays and routes.”
Purcell is seeing the differences in his talents after the hours of extra work playing 7-on-7 and drilling with 3D QB, “I have always been accurate, but one improvement has been my arm power. I have more zip on it and velocity. The zip and velocity, that is a good with the long ball; I have always been better with the intermediate passes.”
The improvements have been on display this summer at college camps.
“I camped at a TCU mega camp; that was my first camp, that went well,” Purcell shared. “We were there for two days; there were different coaches there on both days. Western Kentucky saw me there, that’s how I got that offer. Auburn saw me throw there too. I felt that went really well.
“After that we went to Alabama; they are showing a lot of interest. Tommy Rees (OC/QB), while he was at Notre Dame he liked me. He had me go down there. I have a close relationship with him. Him transferring to Alabama was a big jump for me.
“I went to Northwestern, that was a mega camp. There were a lot of Ivy League schools there. I did really well there. I did a private workout at Purdue, that went really well.”
The next chance to spin it for a college crowd may be in SEC country.
“I think we are going to Mississippi State, if the schedule works,” Purcell stated. “It would be at the end of the month, but I am not sure if we will do it.”
The tie to the Bulldogs stems from a long-term relationship with a player on the team.
“The QB there, Will Rogers, I did a QB retreat at the Manning Passing Academy a couple of years ago with him; I’ve always been in contact with him,” Purcell said. “I like how they play. They have a good team and great coaches. That would be my first time going there, I really want to check it out.”
If the trip to Starkville pans out, the mental focal point swings back to preparing for the 2023 season.
“My main focus is having a great freshman year to show I can do stuff in 11-on-11,” Purcell said. “My focus is starting off high school football strong and going from there.”
