David Schmidt (5-11, 175) put it all on the line during his senior campaign helping carry Newberry High School (Gainesville, Fla.) deep into the playoffs. After another impressive season filling up the stat sheet, the turn for the 2024 receiving prospect is finding that next level fit. One is close to being found with a planned announcement on Dec. 21.
Holding offers from Edward Waters, Brown, Stetson, Miami (PWO), and Florida (PWO), Schmidt spoke about what he’s hearing from college coaches.
“My first three games, I think I had six or seven touchdowns,” Schmidt stated. “At that time, coaches were getting into their season and not looking at high school guys. I had 400 yards in three games, and coaches were calling my coach. They were asking about me after my first three games. My quarterback was giving me yards, and I had three returns for touchdowns. That is on my return team allowing me to score. Coaches were calling; I was thrilled to have that great of a start my senior year.”
Teams are still in the rapport building process with Schmidt showing heavy interest.
“I have some Ivy Leagues showing interest, Penn, Harvard, and Columbia,” Schmidt said. “We have been talking to Florida State and UCF. In the past, I was talking to Georgia Tech.”
Schmidt continued, “How Ivys do it, they do an official after you commit or during a visit when you commit. I have talked to Florida about an official visit in January, and I have talked to FSU about it and to Miami about it. With the Ivys, it is weird. I went on a couple of visits to Brown; they sort of gave me an official visit.”
The commitment is coming on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 6:00 p.m. ET.
“I am having a commitment party,” Schmidt shared. “We are having a little ceremony. When I commit, I will have everything ready to go to post on Twitter.”
How Schmidt will pick that one school was explained.
“The first thing is the football program – how they play, how they have been playing, the coaches, and the atmosphere,” Schmidt said. “I like seeing the locker room and how the players and coaches react to one another. I care about the culture.
“I need a good education. I want to get a good degree and play good football. With Ivy League schools, FSU, Florida, and Stetson, they have great academics; that is why I put them on my list. I am looking at the next 40 years, not just the next four.”
During his junior year, Schmidt was an all-purpose monster racking up 960 yards receiving and 110 rushing with 10 total scores. Closing out his high school career, Schmidt secured 30 passes for 625 yards with eight touchdowns and tallied 570 return yards with 12 trips into the end zone.
