Every cycle and every single season within the game has one, and this offseason Trever Jackson has been that guy along college football’s recruiting trail. Jackson (6-2.5, 190) had a strong junior campaign with West Orange High School (Fla.) and then proceeded to blow everyone away with his skills from national 7-on-7 tournaments to high-profile exposure camps attracting attention from all over the country.
The flood of next level opportunities has pushed beyond 30 with Ole Miss and Oklahoma being his most recent offers. Two official visits have been taken with a possible August commitment being planned.
Asked what his recruiting process has been like this summer, Jackson replied, “It has been crazy, and it has been a blessing. Me coming up through the rankings, I knew going to the Elite 11 it would be a great chance to get more offers and blow up even more.”
A half dozen teams are in regular contact with the four-star field general.
“The teams reaching out the most right now are Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Pitt, UCLA, Texas A&M, and Maryland,” Jackson said.
Three unofficial visits were taken this summer to UCLA, Houston, and UCF. The stop in Westwood was detailed.
“It was fun,” Jackson shared. “Me being in California for the first time, it was eye opening. UCLA has a big campus; it was nice with a really good vibe. The coaches are smart and know what they are doing, and their facilities are amazing. It was nice to see something different, it was very-very nice.”
Pitt and Texas A&M brought Jackson to campus on paid for visits.
Pitt: “The Pitt official went well. My QB coach, he is tied in with Pitt. He played there and is a Hall of Famer there. Me going back seeing the coaches, they are a tight-knit family. The community around Pitt loves football, you can tell they are a wholesome community.”
Texas A&M: “It was bigger than I thought it would be. Everyone was telling me it was going to be a big campus; it is bigger than you expect. With coach Jimbo (Fisher) being the head coach there, after being at Florida State, it was a dream come true. Coach (Bobby) Petrino (OC), his background and with his NFL experience, that is really big too. It was amazing.”
Three other teams are in the running to welcome Jackson to campus at the end of the month.
“For the end of July, I am trying to set up a visit between Maryland, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma; I have to set those up,” Jackson stated.
Since the announced offer from the Sooners on July 11, the coaches in Norman have been pushing hard to build a strong rapport with Jackson.
“Our relationship is pretty good,” Jackson said. “My former receiver (2022) Jayden Gibson is at Oklahoma; he talks great about them all the time. He pushes them well in my recruiting. Coach (Brent) Venables, he really stresses you have to focus on something outside of football; other than football what will you have, what kind of man will you be after football? Coach (Jeff) Lebby (OC/QB), you can tell he is a great guy. His offensive mind is amazing, and how he has used QBs with the same traits that I have, I could win a Heisman or a championship there.”
Asked if there will be any other official visits popping up, Jackson replied, “I am trying to commit before the season starts. I was going to stop taking official visits, but I really don’t know now. Everything is going crazy right now. I don’t know if I should hold off or not.”
Although two official visits have been taken, a decision by Jackson has not been made yet.
“I’d say pretty much every school is still a contender for me; I have not closed the door yet,” Jackson shared. “All the schools I am still in contact with, they are top contenders.”
If a commitment happens sooner than later, Jackson laid out the possible plan.
“I want to do it before the season,” Jackson said. “If I do it before the season, it will be the second or first week of August; the first through the 17th or 18th. But I don’t know yet. My birthday is Aug. 25, I might hold out until my birthday.”
In late June, Jackson transferred from West Orange to Jones High School in Orlando.
