Taking on Willis High School during the 2022 season was not fun for Texas defenses, and that same notion will apply again this fall. The Wildkats [sic] had a three-headed monster on the outside fed by four-star 2024 Florida QB commit Derek “DJ” Lagway. One of Lagway’s top targets was DeBraun Hampton. Hampton (5-11, 170) was one of the team’s leading receivers hauling in 41 passes for 735 yards with nine scores posted on the board through 10 games. Those skills have brought three offers to the table with new interest coming his way.
The Willis offense was explained.
“We run a Spread offense,” Hampton said. “We are a throw-heavy offense. We like to get the ball out quick. Coach (Trent) Miller is a great offensive coordinator; he is great with our offense.”
Planning for a big senior season, Hampton has been working on his overall game.
“I have been working on my yards after the catch, my speed, my hand-eye coordination, ball skills, and getting down the field as fast as possible,” Hampton stated. “I am simulating getting a touchdown on each rep. This offseason I have also been working on getting separation, the top of my routes, and getting off the line faster.”
Part of Hampton’s spring was playing 7-on-7 with Texas Fury.
“We did well,” Hampton shared. “It went well. I got great exposure playing different teams. We did well on both sides of the ball.”
After team, individual, and 7-on-7 reps this offseason, Hampton is seeing differences in his game.
“I feel I have improved a lot,” Hampton said. “I am seeing improvements in my speed and knowing the game. The game has slowed down. Once I learned the coverages and defenses, 7-on-7 has helped me with that, and that has translated to high school.”
Northern Arizona, Prairie view A&M, Texas Southern have dropped offers, interest is picking up.
“I recently went to Florida for a visit; I have been talking to them,” Hampton stated. “Sam Houston, UTSA, and North Texas are also showing interest.”
Hampton competed in his first college camp of the summer on Thursday at North Texas with upcoming competitive stops at Prairie View, UTSA, and Houston.
All the extra work and instruction at the college camps will help Hampton towards his fall goals.
“I plan to have over 2,000 yards, at least 30 touchdowns and earn first team All-District, All-State, All-County, Gatorade Player of the Year, and first team MaxPreps.” Hampton said.
In addition to being a leader for Willis on offense, Hampton made a big impact with his speed and field vision on special teams taking back nine kicks for 265 yards and two punts for 51 yards with one touchdown scored. Hampton’s overall efforts brought postseason accolades earning first team All-Montgomery County and first team All-District as a receiver.
