A year ago, the Michigan Wolverines dropped an offer on Buford (Ga.) 2025 linebacker Mantrez Walker (6-1, 222) picking up his commitment on Feb. 11. Once college and high school football action got going again this fall, Walker split ties with the Wolverines on Sept. 11. On Dec. 12, the four-star backer is ready to announce his top schools with a recruiting plan going forward.
In the neighborhood of 30 offers, Walker ran down the programs reaching out.
“Right now, Ole Miss, Penn State, Tennessee, Mizzou, Louisville, LSU, Michigan State, and there are a couple more I am forgetting… Colorado and Arkansas,” Walker said.
A trio of schools yet to offer are giving interest to Walker, “I have received a couple of texts from Vandy, BYU, and Wisconsin. But every school talking to me on a consistent basis has already offered me.”
Four teams welcomed Walker to campus for games this fall.
“I went to South Carolina, Tennessee, and I went up to Georgia Tech,” Walker stated. “I went to Penn State, but I missed the game. But I caught the backend, and I visited the next day.”
College teams made the trip to see the Wolves’ star defender in action.
“Louisville came to see me play, so did LSU and Michigan State,” Walker shared. “Penn State told me they were going to come after their season. Tennessee also came to see me play.”
All the schools on Walker’s list of favorites will get a visit in the coming months.
“January will be busy for me,” Walker said. “I am supposed to go to Florida. I know I am going to Louisville, Ole Miss, and I will make it to Miami; they are reaching out constantly. I forgot to mention them earlier.
“There are some more in March; I want to go to Stanford and LSU. I will probably visit Virginia Tech and Colorado. I am dropping a top 12 on Dec. 12; I am trying to hit all of them up. In late May, I will drop a top six before OV season. I will make a decision at the end of the summer before my senior season starts.”
The criteria for the 12 was shared, “My top schools list is based off who is reaching out, where I can see myself playing, coaching stability, coaches wanting me, the linebackers they are getting in this class, the depth chart, and places where I can thrive. There are some places on there that I see are on the rise. My relationships with coaches and academics are part of that list.”
Before Walker committed to Michigan, he released a top four that included LSU, Florida, and Penn State.
