Throughout the 2017 high school football season, receiver Bryce Farrell (5-11, 170) was one of the most dynamic play-makers in California’s 2020 recruiting class. The Oaks Christian standout hauled in 63 passes for 1,168 yards with nine touchdowns, carried the rock eight times for 50 yards, and shinned as a return specialist taking back 12 kicks for 350 yards and 18 punts for 207 additional all-purpose yards. The overall productivity along with his 18.5 yards per reception average forced college coaches to take notice and start dropping offers. In total, 12 reported offers have gone out for Farrell but Stanford kept the four-star recruit in-state earning his verbal commitment on June 21, 2018.

In a Recruiting News Guru catch-up interview, I sat down with Farrell covering his offseason workouts while getting an inside scoop on his relationship with the Cardinal.

Interview

Bryce, how have your spring and summer workouts gone?

“We have a new coaching staff, it is pretty cool going over the new offense. The team is starting to click. We are starting to look like a machine instead of a bunch of guys just running around.”

What has been the focus of your workouts from a technical point of view?

“I have been working on route running, catching the ball in traffic, and continuing to learn the game – the IQ side of it. I have increased my understanding of the game. Now I have a better understanding of knowing where I have to be and where the holes are in the defense. I have a better understanding of the concepts.”

You mentioned the new offense, what type of offense are you guys executing in 2018?

“We are running a West Coast offense. We are still a spread, but it will change a lot.”

Where are you seeing the biggest gains in your skillset this offseason?

“Blocking. Because I have gained 20 pounds, I play more physical now. Catching in traffic is easier and I have more confidence being heavier.”

How have spring and summer practices with the Lions gone?

“We are a team. We play together. We did not lose a lot of seniors. The team chemistry is still there. We are working as a unit, and the guys are fired up to win some games.”

Based on practices, where all will you line up in 2018?

“I am playing outside and inside receiver, and maybe some Wildcat. I am returning punts and kicks as well.”

Are there any new wrinkles to the offense that will highlight you in different ways during your junior season?

“I am pretty sure they are going to get the ball in my hands in different ways. Our offensive coordinator will find ways to get us the ball. It will be exciting to watch.”

What goals have you set for yourself for the 2018 season?

“My first goal is to win a ring again. My personal goal, I want to have 1,500 receiving yards. But, the main focus is winning games.”

Bryce Farrell’s offer sheet: Stanford, Nebraska, Arizona State, Cal, BYU, San Jose State, TCU, Washington State, Nevada, Notre Dame, and Florida

On June 21, you committed to Stanford, how did the Cardinal work that relationship with you becoming your ideal school?

“I loved Stanford since I was little. Education is a huge part of my life. I didn’t think Stanford would have interest in me, their receivers are typically big. When they offered me, I knew that was where I was going. When I went up there and when I talked to them on the phone, they showed me love. I am excited to be part of the family. The Stanford network is great. I want to major in computer science; being in Silicon Valley, Stanford is a great place to do it.”

How will they utilize you within their offense once on campus?

“The like my speed, they will probably use me at slot having me stretch the field, running underneath stuff – stuff in the middle of the defense.”

When are you visiting Palo Alto next?

“I think I am going up there for the USC game (Sept. 8). Hopefully, I will go up there another time this summer depending on our practices.”

Have you started helping with recruiting?

“I’m trying to, but Stanford is a level of its own. Stanford sells itself. There are a select few they offer; I am blessed to be one. I put in a good word when I can.”

What message are you sharing with other recruits on why they should choose Stanford as their next level fit?

“If you go to Stanford, you are set for life with a degree.”

It is getting close to that time for the season to kickoff, is there a game you are already hyped for in 2018?

“Our opening game against Chaminade. That is the most important game to me right now. The Eastside Catholic (WA), Chaminade, and Calabasas games will be the most fun to play.”

Bryce, I appreciate your time today. Good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts.

“Thank you.”
