KISSIMMEE, Fla. – When Deion Sanders left Jackson State for Colorado, he immediately got 2025 Florida receiver Winston Watkins Jr. (6-0, 185) to follow. The four-star talent out of Bradenton’s (Fla.) IMG Academy has been a hard lock with the Buffaloes since his Dec. 4 verbal pledge. On April 22, Watkins will take his first visit to Boulder ready to see Colorado get after it in their spring game.
Watkins didn’t hold back his anticipation for the visit sharing, “I am very excited. I can’t wait to get up there to see my family and watch them boys ball.”
The coaches on staff have been giving Watkins periodic updates on the spring practices.
“They have been working getting everyone ready, getting the chemistry right, learning the plays and all of that,” Watkins said. “They look good from what I have seen on video.”
The coaches will not be the only ones evaluating the players during the scrimmage.
“I will be paying attention to the play calling, how much they throw the ball, and watch to see how much they have learned,” Watkins stated. “I will watch for the little things like what they do at the top of their routes and their releases to see what they know.”
Part of the first-time experience for Watkins is interacting with the fans and student body.
“I want to see the fans and the students because if I go there, I will be there with them not just as a player but also as a student,” Watkins said. “I want to see the culture there and I want to see how much they love football there.”
The attendees this weekend will be a star-studded lineup with players from all over the country ready to see the new look Buffaloes. Watkins has been doing his part to sway some of the nation’s best to commit to CU.
“(2024 RB) Stacy Gage, (2025 QB) Bryce Underwood, (2024 DE) Colin Simmons, and (2024 DT) David Stone too, I have been talking to a few people,” Watkins said.
Asked his recruiting pitch to other elite prospects, Watkins replied, “You get to play for Deion Sanders, you get playing time, and you will be taught the game. I know the coaches there will get them boys right. They have to trust the process and faith in what their coaches can do for you.”
