The college football world was somewhat taken aback on Sunday when the University of Georgia fired head coach Mark Richt. The parting of ways was called a “mutual decision” by Bulldogs athletic director Greg McGarity, but the writing is on the wall.
Despite Richt posting a win-loss record of 145-51 in 15 seasons in Athens with two SEC titles and nine seasons of 10 or more wins, Richt was no longer valued by the boosters and administration which has already caused an immediate reaction by the Bulldog players. Junior linebacker Leonard Floyd announced Sunday night, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “I’m gone too, by the way!”
Floyd backed up the sentiment on Twitter posting, “I’m leaving.” Then followed that message with, “Coach Richt probably was the only one that could of [sic] convinced me to stay just a sad day for me as a Dawg.”
Floyd, listed at 6’4”, 230 pounds, is second on the team with 68 tackles but leads the Bulldogs in tackles for a loss with 10.5 while posting 4.5 sacks. Floyd is considered a strong NFL prospect.
Georgia, 9-3, 5-3, finished second in the SEC East Division and are awaiting a bowl invitation to complete the 2015 season.
